why do the oilers do that? its basically a 3rd rounder and a depth dman that can't defend. Oilers need a 4/5 Defensive LHD they don't need nor should want del zotto and a 3rd for a young cost-controlled guy whos elite defensively and was playing at 45+pts /82gp in a "bad" year.

I don't know where the widely-held misconception that we need dead weight for cap purposes comes from -- we're $18 million under the cap floor with 5 forward and 2 defense slots open, and our three RFA forwards will probably consume $6 million of that. It won't be hard to spend $12 million on 5 actual players this off-season. And if we're taking on cap dumps, it will be with some immediate and valuable tangible benefits involved, like first-round draft picks. Heck, I can see us trading Max Jones and Sam Steel for the 26th overall selection in this year's draft and Jeff Petry or even Brendan Gallagher.
