Due to Compher's cap hit, I wouldn't make that trade as is. The pick would have to be a 2nd or high-3rd for me to make the deal without some level of cap retention. In moving Jesse for Compher, they would be committing to paying a 3rd liner 3.5mil which defeats part of the purpose for trading him in the first place (cap flexibility).

On the plus side for your proposal, Compher is likely exactly the kind of player Holland and Co. would be looking for.

I like this trade for Colorado, and I've proposed it elsewhere myself, but it's probably not very realistic for the reasons you mentioned, especially the cap situation for Edmonton.

Getting a young RW who can skate and forecheck and has multiple years of team control left at $3m or less would be a good return for one year of Compher.

I think Bednar loves Compher though so it would be a bit surprising to see him moved instead of them betting on him having a career year in a contract year.

Regarding the lines here, I think you'd see Landeskog with MacKinnon rather than Giroux, if only for faceoffs. G and L are both good at draws so you don't want them both on the same line.

Interesting. I thought this would be a decline for the Oilers even outside of Compher’s cap hit.

I really doubt Colorado would want to retain in a cup contention year, but they probably could if it’s just for 1 season. Avs actually have some flexibility this summer

If EDM were smart they would pass, though Compher performance against them in the playoffs might swing their mind.

It likely should be a decline, but I'm allowing for some flexibility for the sake of discussion. I think Compher fits the profile of the kind of player Holland wants more of to go along with the Hymans, Yamamotos, and Foegeles- which is to say, the diligent workers that play with pace and attack the hard areas. On top of being in the right age bracket where players are at their most consistent and having shown well in the playoffs, he fits quite nicely as an acquisition target.

Full disclosure, I would much rather pursue other younger & cheaper targets.
