I do like McDonagh and he’s a proven winner, but I think there are better, younger, cheaper options available that we could get without shooting ourselves in the foot cap-wise. I definitely wouldn’t hate this and I feel like that’s kinda the best Tampa is gonna be able to get for him, but I’d rather look elsewhere personally

No chance Tampa retains on McD and that return is a bit underwhelming.

Not saying Varlamov is not worth a 2nd round pick, but the Hawks are rebuilding, and I can't see them losing a high pick for someone who won't be there when the rebuilding is done. I think a better trade partner for Varlamov could be Edmonton, but you may have to retain some salary due to Edmonton's cap situation.

McDonagh’s overall impact over the last three years or so has been kinda meh. I know he’s got the two rings and his value is probably more than any public numbers are gonna show, but I just think as far as his age and recent production has been, it would’ve been a bad fit for the Isles.

I’m really interested in either Sam Girard if COL would move him or Brett Kulak as UFA a if they wouldn’t. It also sounds like Nic Hague and Oliver Kylington could be available as RFAs, although those are probably a little more unlikely. But I’d take all of those guys over McDonagh and I think will add as much or more value over the next four years as him

Ok well considering the trade is already done, only Kulak would be cheaper here and only Girard would possibly have a higher inpact

I mean two years from now if McDonagh continues to age, I’d argue any one of them is a better bet to be a productive member of a team’s top 4 than him. Girard is probably significantly more expensive and who knows if he’s ever available, but I’d happily pay the price considering the impact he could have, now and in the future.

But like you said, what’s done is done. Glad the Isles passed
