i wouldn't be surprised if TB deosn't buy Myers out they can't afford the dead cap next year

Next year the cap crunch is harder, yes, but buying him out nets us $3.1m this year at the cost of $600k next year, so that's still really hard to turn down.

Nashville essentially got him for free. Tampa clears cap space. Win-win.

I don't really understand it from Nashville's POV with Ekholm & Josi locked in for the next four years. Feels like this is a mismatch.
Hard to replace on Tampa as well

This trade just a mismash of players.

Win for both teams.
Nashville gets a solid defenseman and Tampa Bay gets a ton of cap space - and 2nd-pair ice time for Sergachev.

This is a good trade for both sides.

The trade is McDonagh for cap space. That's it. Mismash has little to no value. Tampa is almost certainly going to buyout the contract of Myers. Because Myers contract is backloaded, Tampa will get a cap credit this season of roughly 600k at the expense of 600k in dead cap being on the books in 23-24, which means a buyout is cap neutral with the bonus that they get a bit of cap help this season when they likely value it more.

At 33 years old, McDonagh had a NTC, term, and a reasonable sized cap hit. So it isn't surprising that Tampa accepted a trade that amounts to giving him away for nothing. Given the context, they got off easy. Which isn't to say McDonagh is a bad player, he clearly isn't, but Tampa was backed into a corner.

Good trade for both sides. While Nashville saves a bit of money on the Myers buyout, this essentially boils down to a UFA signing for them since they gave nothing away.

kudos to Poille! McDonagh has 2-3 seasons as a great top 4 dman. and 1-2 seasons as a serviceable bottom pairing dman like Staal. All for a guys who cleared waivers and a 2nd round pick from 2017.

Why is Tampa being bailed out of their cap struggles?

Not buying him out would be surprising.

I like McDonagh but am shocked they did not have to retain any salary. That contract sucks

Fake news...

Myers will be bought out. %100.

Trying to save face on day 1 of the trade announcement, once the GM see's the fans and media are positive on the buyout, Tbay will know it's the right move.

Bold prediction:
Grant Mishmash will end up being the best player in this trade when we look back on it.

Tampa always finds a way. Losing McDonagh hurts but if it means keeping Paul and Palat you might have no other choice considering cap and Mac's age.

Tampa won this trade just because they got needed cap space. Will be interested to see what they get for Killorn.

Tampa's D is looking a bit weak. Not sure they're still Cup contenders unless someone (Cal Foote) steps up next season.

That is an over simplification. Not every trade is win or lose.

Trade value is irrelevant if a NTC blocks a team from extracting it.

Because of Myers buyout format, Tampa traded McDonagh for approx. 27 million in cap space over the next four years. For Nashville, this is closer to a UFA signing since the only assets they gave up was cap space, and the only asset they acquired was mostly the player (they did get a small amount of real money salary relief from avoiding Myers buyout). There is an opportunity cost for them to acquire McDonagh, which is they now tie up 27 million on him that could have been used on a different player.

Trades can be win/win.
-If Tampa can make better use of that 27 million than they would by keeping McDonagh, the trade is a win for them.
-If McDonagh is better than any UFA or trade options that Nashville could get for 27 million over the next four years, the trade is a win for them.

Both sides used their different situations to find a balance and make a good trade.

People are so hyped on Brisebois like if he could do no wrong.

How is loosing your 2nd best defenseman for a capdump and an AHLer a good deal?

I get McDonagh had a NTC but the best move would had been to make handshake deals with his UFAs and wait for free agency to kick in to get more buyers involved... Like KH will probably do with Petry wink

Ooooooooffffffff

Like, I get the business side of things and this means they keep Sergy long time and don't have to really give up anything pics/prospect wise to do so, I get all that. But that's a massive blow for Tampa's blueline.

Nashville could’ve commanded a better return from Tampa considering the Bolts’ situation.

Yeah. But this way they can secure Palat for (possibly) cheaper deal before he has the opportunity to talk to other teams.

If Tampa can trade McDonough this easily even though he has an NTC, can't the Leafs trade Muzzin easily by this same logic?

Another situation like the MTL-Vegas one.

Tampa - Clears tons of cap space to resign their key guys + give them flexibility
Nashville - Gets a guy for way under market value while offloading a negative asset.

Fair deal, Tampa clears desperately needed cap and Nashville gets a top 4 D for pennies
