Walker for the unsigned Ryan Johnson is a good idea. Trading our starting goaltender and franchise icon in the last year of his current contract isn't.

Walker isn’t enough to get you Johnson alone. If Quick isn’t in the deal (and I doubt that you’d be sending Cal Petersen the other way no matter how funny it would be) what else will you add so it is fair?

I think that you're overvaluing Johnson's worth. There's a not inconsiderable chance that he plays out his college career and then waits three months to sign with either of his hometown teams, both of which need LDs. Inasmuch as the latest rumors have Walker being ready by training camp (instead of January), I don't think that there's much more than a fourth there.

At the lowest Johnson’s value is at least a second round pick because that’s what you get if you don’t sign him. If wherever he lands can sign him I would say his value is still higher.

I agree with you about the second, but I don't think that his value increases if he signs because by then it's too late -- the trade has already occurred. And I contend that because Walker's value is a third, and he's already a proven asset, then there isn't much to add.

I still think that Grans for Johnson is a better deal. The risk is all Los Angeles', but you get a guy with a longer window.
