Disagree with much of this from an evaluation standpoint.

    Nylander not being moved

Sandin is not getting more then Lilgrens 2x1.4

Subban of no interest unless on a spezza 800k deal

Georgiev not the guy and certainly not with kalgreen as backup for a team with cup aspirations.

For sure the specific deals aren't the point I'm making here. Just a framework to showcase an idea. NJ wants to get better now, Slafkovski adds size at a low $ amount.

This takes one step back, and injects some youth on ELC's to surround the core which is too top heavy right now. This makes the team worse today, and much better in 2 years

Since 50% is retained. White had a bad year but before that is similar production to Kerfoot on a far worse team, cheaper/younger/bigger with the retained salary and is also a defensive specialist with PK ability.

The Leaf's are in win now mode so why would they take a step back? 2 years later Matthews might be gone. They are on the cusp of breaking through. They need to lock up a real #1 and I would like to see them add a solid power forward on the wing and you can add D depth at the deadline

Thats fine, take the extra money from Sandin and Subban deals and get a better goalie, sign Fluery to league min and its basically the same. Subban isn't going to be playing for league minimum though.

Oh for sure, and if the cap didn't exist, they could easily do all of that. What moves allow them to do all that you just suggested? Right now, they cant even sign a backup goalie... Nevermind a T6 power forward a #1 goalie and depth on D...

We've seen teams retool mid push, I agree they're close but unless you can move JT, its going to be a struggle. This team I made isn't very much worse, except for the Nylander removal, and who knows how long a winger like Slafkovski (at 6'4" and 220lbs already) is going to take to make an impact at the NHL level.

Just because you retain on a bad player doesn't make them worth anything. Dude is a stretch at being woth a 7th at full price, retained doesnt jump him up to a 2nd

    1. Fluery not interested in Toronto and not playing anywhere for league minimum. If he is then of course dubas would sign that deal.

    2. Subban like giordano and spezza has made his money and might want to play at home in Toronto for close to league minimum. Could he get more elsewhere, sure but it’s not unrealistic to say he may valu3 playing in Toronto more then the cash.

I can't see New Jersey trading the possibility of a Calder Trophy winner or Norris Trophy winner or even Hart Trophy winner for two years of William Nylander, especially because their window won't open for those two years, and I know Seattle isn't taking on Muzzin's huge cap hit and giving you a very high second while doing so.

OK that is fine, make it a 4rd. This is just a group of ideas of how I think Toronto could be much better in 2 years while solving some of their current issues. The 2nd or 3rd doesnt change much for toronto or ottawa. Nichuskin might need more money too, but there is a couple million left in cap space. I dont see the point in arguing over the fine details. Its all relatively vague but doesnt impact the overall idea.

I just wouldn't trade for him at all. Hes still a vad player and a negative asset at 50% retained and that 2.3 mill could go towards a much better player

OK thats fair. We could argue about his worth at 2.3. Last year he was injured and had a terrible year. Before that, he and kerfoot are very similar and White would be 1.2/yr cheaper. With that said, for a 2nd, you can find another 3/4 line defensive forward that can take a faceoff.
