McDonagh to BJ - Plan B

Created by: McPhee_Moustache
Team: 2022-23 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 5, 2022
Published: Jul. 5, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If CBJ missed out on McDonagh and are looking for an upgrade on D with a puck-moving D, Petry could be an excellent plan B.
Finding the matching trade value was tough TBH. Comments with your thoughts and possible counters which could potentially make the trade go through.

So instead of claiming a free defender, we move pick 12 and texier for one? Don’t see why cbj would do this.

I can see that rationale, however, the context and constraints of the agreement with TB differ since TB was looking to offload due to cap constraints, whereas this proposal was more of a hockey trade.

Not sure how aggressive CBJ will be in upgrading their D-Core.

Agree here. I think it was important to note that Jarmo said he would pick up McDonagh off of waivers meaning he did not want to give up an asset for him. We will give up assets for good players ~25 and younger or very minor assets for good leadership.

McDonagh had a full ntc. He likely doesnt waive to America's Winnipeg. Brisebois had no leverage that is why McDonagh was dumped for nothing

Any aggressive moves would be made for a younger defenseman. Think Carlo dumba or walker. We won’t be moving assets (just like we wouldn’t have for mcd), for petry. If petry needs to be waived however, we’d probably put a claim in. Just like we offered with Ryan.

I can see that. However, I did note that the D-Core is still relatively young. So I was wondering if Jarmo was seeking some veteran leadership.

Oh I think he Definitely is. However is veteran leadership worth trading down from pick 12 and giving up a young player who has been our best player in stretches. We would be better off overpaying for one in free agency and keeping our assets.

Relax bud.

Jarmo wasn't paying assets for him either.
