Smart move for OTT, they only have to pay him 1/3 of his remaining salary in actual cash since he is under 26 and the penalty is a lot of years but super low.

That 1/3rd is 10.5M in actual cash savings too. Should go nicely towards the new arena

win-win for both sides, IMO - Ottawa moves on from a guy they were overpaying and White can get a chance to go play somewhere else on a more realistic deal and not have the burden of trying to be a $5M player. I still think he's a decent bottom 6 guy for a lot of teams.

Makes me wonder though. Are they posturing for some big trade/signing or is it just a move they were planning to make anyway? They aren't really hard up for cap space even with guys like White, Zaitsev, and Murray on the books.

Maybe. But this was more about efficiency. Saves them loads of money, was the last year they could realistically do it at a decent cap hit, and opens up a lot of potential cap space.

Personally I still have Giroux landing there

The thing is let’s say they keep the team as is and give Formenton + Joseph deals in the 2 mill range, Norris in the 7s and Brannstrom in the 1s , they’d still be around 70 mill which is likely where they want to be. If they want to add someone , they have to get rid of 1 of Zaitsev or Murray

Well, sure. I get the want, but there isn't necessarily a need for it. They could make things work pretty well without moving them. But all of that aside, I'm just excited to see what OTT does in the coming year(s) on the ice, and how much of a difference new ownership, arena, etc. is going to make, as well.

Zaitsev is most likely getting shipped to the desert, Garrioch indicated as much in his latest column... say what you will about him but he is still the mouthpiece of the organization.

Friedge also reported Dorion likes Keller's contract more as the term/money is a little more appealing than what it would've cost for Fiala. Could see 7th overall being moved for him.

There is a lot of positivity right now about the future of the organization, don't get me wrong. I'm just a little skeptical of PD and Co. transitioning from rebuild to competitor. His track record on bringing in quality pieces has been checkered at best. I think he's a bit more cautious when it comes to moving futures (Duchene trade).

I view moving on from Zaitsev and Murray as a "trimming the fat" moves. Their contracts are blocking potential prospects from fully graduating (JBD/Thomson and GusBus).

Brannstrom
Forward prospect
7th overall

For Keller would be a massive win

Are you ready for that forward prospect to be Greig? I'm tentative because I see so much upside in Greig...

I really don’t want to trade Greig or Pinto. I’d move Formenton tho if I have to
