My ideal situation Hard choice but best for the long term

Created by: PeterK
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 19, 2022
Published: Jul. 6, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think the Leafs should have one more go with this general roster. With Bunting at 950K they have excellent value on the roster. Depending on what the pending RFA's want I think they can nearly run back the same roster.

Punt the ball down the line with Campbell. He is a great goalie provided you can get a decent backup. Driedger should be had for cheap as he had a terrible year but I think he can still be a good goalie behind a good team.
Ilya Mikheyev has priced himself out, unless he is taking a lower number you move on and keep Engvall (if Micky is cheaper keep him instead of Engvall).
I don't think Kase is back unless its at a low number, the injury trouble may keep the value down. Spezza will be back on the team or on the staff in some way shape or form.

Gonna have to pay a whole lot more than that to get anyone to eat almost $20 mil in salary over 2 years from two very mediocre players.

The forward depth looks okay. Nichushkin Is gonna want at least 6 or more. Manson doesn’t really seem like the type of guy to come here and plus he wants to go back to Anaheim. The Columbus trade is terrible

Chicago ain't doing that for Kerfoot, but a team that isn't as deep into a rebuild may.

Do you know what he's after? He has proven to be even still an excellent goalie. I'd love less but he is also the best goalie on the market this offseason.

Yes, you are right. I forgot I had Chicago as the taker. I think Ottawa or even including in the Columbus trade would be fine. He is only owed 750K in real $$ this season. Signing bonus has been paid.

Also, "ain't"?

They were in on McDonough, while he may be better than Muzzin, Muzzin is comparable, slightly cheaper and on a fair deal that doesn't continue for FOUR more years. Muzzin has actual value, quality defender and good leader. I hate to see him go. McDonough was traded for nothing because of a cap squeeze, Toronto is NOT in that situation.

Perhaps, but for a guy that was bought out a couple years ago I'd be hoping he would be happy with guaranteed term on a good team. I still think Colorado retains him though.

We rumored to pick up Ryan off waivers. So at least muzzin is worth zero, if not seen as a dump. Petr is a cap dump and would need more coming back for the jackets to be willing to accept. We’re not eating 10 million in cap for a 4th

The Columbus trade is not terrible. Korpisalo wants out. Muzzin is very good.

Manson likely back to Anaheim yes, but if I got to pick and choose, I think he'd be great in Toronto with Sandin as a partner.

Korpisalo was a UFA who signed a one year deal almost as soon as the season was over. What about that says "Get me out of here" to you?

How is Muzzin worth zero? Please explain. His contract is perfectly fair for a player like him and 2 more years. It doesn't run too long like the McDonough contract AND isn't on a cap strapped team like Tampa. I think people fail to realize that Toronto does not have cap problems this year. They are fine everywhere except in goal and I don't think any UFA goalies except MAF are the answer for them.

No there haven't. Just Jarmo thinking about trading him a couple years ago before all the injuries when Merzlikins and Korpisalo were both pushing for the starting job and were seen as a 1a and 1b when Korpisalo had his value peak. Korpisalo has never said he wants to leave nor has it been reported by anyone tied to the Jackets media. If he wanted to leave he would be testing FA.

Jarmo came out yesterday and said that the rumor of them being involved with McDonugh was completely false and there was no agreement to claim him off waivers.

Also Korpisalo never asked to be traded, at least that we’ve been made aware of, and the fact that he signed right after the season ended say he probably doesn’t want to leave or he believes this is his only option to play in the NHL, because since the bubble he hasn’t exactly been very good.

OK, fair enough. If I were him I'd take the trade though, maybe try to get a little more value for the Mrazek deal but Muzzin is a damn good dman to be getting for a low cost. Think of all the value that could be had flipping and retaining on him! Columbus ins't in it next year, sell off Muzzin for 1.5 or 2 years at 2.8M per. That would be some value added.

He had a pretty good season, especially in Minnisota. I think he's great and at one year when their aren't many other good goalies available, I'd take him.

As for muzzin being worth zero. I’m implying that we were trying to get Ryan for free. We wouldn’t be turning and trying to offer assets for a worse player. Here’s the thing if you don’t move muzzin and petr, your kinda close to the cap. So we wouldn’t be looking to do you any favors. So that’s where we stand

My point was that McDonough has zero trade value because the Lightening need to move him to resign important players (Palat, etc.) He was clearly the man that had to leave based on age and contract. Muzzin is not that. McDonough may be better than Muzzin but it isn't a huge gap and Muzzin still has trade value since he is a solid player, the type of Dman most teams want to have at least 1, if not 2, of. He is signed two more years at a reasonable cap hit. Toronto doesn't need to trade him but it is what I think they should consider since Sandin deserves more of a look and is apparently concerned about his role on the team/ice time.

Then it’s simple the jackets won’t be targeting him. We were looking for a very low or no acquisition cost option. For xyz reason muzzin is perceived to have value than he’s not an option for the jackets.
