Sandin definitely signs that offer, and the Leafs likely let him walk at that price (good luck qualifying him next year). As for the Mrazek deal, there is a 0% chance Toronto moves Knies to get out from under that deal. They wouldn't even move him for Fleury at the deadline

Honest question, what has Sandin done to warrant anywhere near that close of money? I’d also say he isn’t a Yzerman defender based on his size + skating & what I’d call as a lack of compete as it seems he wants to be handed a top 6 spot.

Just my opinion. Knies turned down the Leafs contract offer last spring. IMO he is going the college graduate free agent route. My guess is that he joins he Arizona buddy Austen Matthews in LA in summer of 2024. I don't believe Sandin is eligible to be offer sheeted . He hasn't played the 80 games required in the NHL in the past two seasons.

Lol what? Players go back to college all the time. He didn't refuse a contract he just committed to school like 90% of players drafted out of American schools do.

It's with that kind of money that you steal him from TOR, and possibly sign him at a lower price at the end of the season like the Hurricanes did with Kotkaniemi.

He doesn't deserve that $4.2M at all, but it's the idea forcing Toronto to not match and get another young asset that could be a top 4 defensemen. Leafs have no leverage

I agree with the Matthew Knies situation, I think he will be walking to free agency and Sandin actually can be OS (he is the top target apparently)

He now has finished two years of college and committed for the third year. Next spring he has the big decision whether to sign for a contract that might be pay 80,000 as Marlie or finish school and have the choice of what NHL team he wants to join.
We'll see. But that is my opinion that Matthews and Knies will never sign another contract with the Leafs.

Matthew Knies is taking the free agency route, I agree with palhal. He heard about the CHI/TOR trade and saw that the Leafs wanted to get rid of him so he isn't willing to sign with the Leafs

Knies didn't refuse a contract. he opted to go back to school, which happens all the time. Your assumption is right up there with people always assuming Matthews wants to play in AZ because hes from there. If that were the generic thought then the leafs should have every Toronto player banging on their door. Matthews wants to win and he LOVES the spotlight. And Sandin can definitely be offer sheeted

He’s also not a Yzerman type player like I mentioned. We also have Edvinsson, Wallinder, Johansson, Buium, Viro as LD so why spend assets to “steal” something that exactly high on the prio list?

It was to answer your question what has Sandin done to warrant anywhere near that close of money - you're not trading assets and paying him $4.2M for what he is now, but for what he can do for the next 10ish years.

Except that Toronto refused the trade because of his involvement. Knies is linked in a lot of trades because hes a top asset. These guys arent stupid

That’s just one of part of the question. The second being my response saying he isn’t a Yzerman type player and it’s an organizational strength in the pipeline. So why spend assets/agitate an organization for something that isn’t a need? I’d understand paying for his potential if he was a fit + need but he’s neither.

I have a friend who has a friend that is close to his family. My friend told me that he didn't say much like he wants to request a trade or anything but basically all that was said was that Knies isn't happy about the situation

Apparently Knies was offered a contract....but he elected to continue play in the NCAA. Yes it happens all the time, but still doesn't deter from the probably fact that he refused to sign to a pro contract. No, I don't think Matthews wants to sign with Arizona. But I do believe he wants to sign with major US market, yes that can be his spotlight . That can be LA, with a good team and cap when Kopitar contract expires.
So sorry to bring my opinion to this forum on two players who have the choice where they sign their next pro contracts. So please stop banging this homerism that the Leafs are entitled to keep all their draftees and all their UFAs.

Wow, no one must ever draft guys out of college because they walk all the time right?
This is pure doom fantasy and not remotely grounded in reality
