Personally I don't think this is a worth while trade for the Stars. Unless there is retention, he's not worth a second.

He had a down year I get that. Throw him on a playoff team and he should go back to the skill he was before this year. Once again what are the odds that pick 50 is ever as good as him. He replaces Klingberg if they can’t keep him.

I see that logic yes. But what if that pick hits and turns into a Arthur Kaliyev, Nils Höglander, Alexander Romanov, Jason Robertson, Nic Hague, Jesper Boqvist, Mario Ferraro, Alex DeBrincat, Jordan Kyrou, Filip Hronek, Erik Cernak, Sebastian Aho, Brandon Carlo, Jordan Greenway.

And that's just a few hits in round 2 back to 2015.

And if Petry doesn't get better, unretained that's a big contract that looks so bad.

I can see him no retained for a 3rd or early 4th. Or I can see him retained 50% for a late second, early 3rd

Montreal traded Ben Chiarot for a 1st round pick. Petry is quite a bit better than Ben Chiarot (although Petry is on a longer term contract than Chiarot was when Chiarot was traded). Petry turned into his old self when St. Louis came on board as the coach. Montreal may have to take a mediocre contract back (i.e. $4M for a year or two), but I think Petry is definitely worth a first round pick in a trade if Ben Chiarot resulted in a first.

Chiarot is younger, on a better contract, and actually is worth a late first.

Petry is not worth a late first no matter how much you think he is LOL
