Cheering for career ending injuries. That's a good look man. Real good look

I will sleep like a baby at night with this contract. Get off your moral high ground.

I will not. You want people to be in life long pain for made up number reasons.

You are everything wrong with this sport

When did I once say that? I simply stated the probable conclusion of letangs career will happen before his contract is up. Touch grass.

Would any of these intellectual ants be complaining if the contract were $8.75 million x 4 years? That's $35 million.

@mhockey91 and others are absolutely right. This is a smart deal.

You are literally saying that the contract is good because he will get injured and it will work out.

That is cheering for injuries. There isn't an argument otherwise. Enough of your ****. Grow up

Thank you! I just understand his injury history and really don’t think he’ll play out the whole deal. It’s a win for Pittsburgh because it keeps the AAV low and a win for Letang because he gets a lot of term, even in years that he isn’t playing.

In 6 years from now, if he is somehow still playing I’ll eat my words, but I really just don’t see it.

God you are insufferable. I’m not actively cheering for injuries. I’m stating that given his history it’s likely inevitable. I love Letang and I’m thrilled to have him back.

I’m just calling a spade a spade. He won’t finish this deal. I’m sure he’s very aware of that as well. Playing a professional sport in the best league in the world at 41 is very difficult, especially given his history. Move along pal. Find somebody else to troll

And SO WHAT if he's still playing in 5 or 6 years? Crosby might be gone, Malkin will definitely be gone, other big-ticket guys might be gone, and the cap will have been raised significantly. His cap hit won't be terrible. The idea of paying out $36.6 million over 6 years is much better than $34 million over the next four. Most people on this site don't understand the concept of the "present value" of money -- i.e., that the value of a dollar today is more than a dollar next year, and a $$$$load more than a dollar in 6 years. Such people think that $8 million for 4 years would be a fine deal, but $4 million for 8 years is horrible. Astounding.

That’s an excellent point as well. And Pens in the later years of the contract will likely need to hit the cap floor regardless. If Letang is somehow playing, they’ll be a bottom feeder team who could use his leadership.

Pens will remain competitive as long sid is playing. Once he’s gone, they’ll be full tank SZN, which lines up with the later years of Letang’s deal. I see no real risk

I don't think he's cheering for a career ending injury. I think he's saying, "Letang has enough lingering injuries that he could "retire" on LTIR any time he wants." At least that's how I read that comment.

Interesting.. I wonder if this type of contract will result in a change of rules for all 35+ contracts regarding LTIR. Clearly they are circumventing the cap to lower the aav with years 4-6. Call me a salty Canucks fan but I dont see how this is much different from what the Canucks did with Luongo.

It’s a fair point. I guess we’ll have to see by the next CBA. The difference I see is that Letang genuinely would have to be “injured” to be placed on LTIR. As I’ve said many times in this thread given his history, it’s very possible

Luongo obviously just decided he no longer wanted to play.

I guess if the league wanted to enforce some sort of rule to prevent this sort of thing I think it would be rather difficult. I think it’s unfair to ban LTIR for players signing over 35 and I don’t think that’ll happen. Can the league prove there was “Ill intent” when signing this contract? I think it’s very difficult to.

I do think this deal is a bit of “legal” circumvention

giving a 35+ y/o NHL player what would be a max contract in the NBA is not a good idea unless you're a lock for the HoF AND don't have durability concerns

This is somehow worse than the Von Miller contract & I'm not even a Pens or Bills fan.
This looks like late-stage Detroit. Maybe if he got 4 years x 5 per I'd be saying something different but this is so bad.

Cannot wait for this contract to be bought out in 3 years time

2 years more than I expected. But, to me, it's not that bad as most here are thinking. AVV is good. The term isn't. So, to me, it's an ok contract. As a Pens fan, I can live with that.

As for Malkin, I really hope Hextall don't offer him more than 3 years. If he offers, than it'll be a disaster for Pens future.

I thought Letang only wanted to play like 3 or 4 more seasons. Not a good re-signing at all.

Letang is still good but will decline in play. Reminds me of the Seabrook contract.
