That is the only thing that makes sense, but situations are also fluid. Ottawa may have thought they were out in Debrincat, or maybe ownership saw the reaction to the Murray scenario and got spooked into spending more to make a splash. Who knows. Melnyk's daughters are basically teenage zoomers. Good chance they glamor searched themselves on Twitter after the Matt Murray trade and had an aneurysm.

We will find it if the original Murray trade was true based on what happens next. If Ottawa attaches someone like Greig or Pinto to Murray, then it was probably true. If Ottawa goes into the season with 80+ million committed to their roster, it was probably BS.

It wouldn't surprise me if we see a three way trade for Murray with a third team getting assets to eat salary and send him to Toronto, and Mrazek either going to Ottawa or the third team. Dorion must have a Murray trade figured out if he pulled the trigger on this. Again, unless something has changed in the last few hours.

Same scenario when there were rumours that Matthew Tkachuk was offered for Jack Eichel.

Instead, Eichel was traded for Tuch, Krebs and a 1st the next day.

They got 2 1sts AND 2 NHL players for Hagel. Debrincat who has 2 41 goal seasons in 5 years and I think is like 6th in NHL in last 5 years for total goals scored all he gets is the 7OA plus the two other picks. Not even a prospect. Not even a player. $hit....not even Matt Murray!

you dont judge a trade by the amount of piece coming back, you judge it on how valuable those piece are. 7th overal > 2 tampa first, radysh and ktachouk .

Never said you would get the 7th overall, but if Hagel can get (2) 1sts and (2) prospects...The CAT should have been able to get more. It's a tough market right now I guess, but he didn't have to FORCE a trade which is what he did.

The Hagel trade isn't a comparable.

The reason Hagel returned what he did is because he broke out as a player on pace for 30 goals, but was only signed to a 1.5M AAV for 3 years. The Lightning paid a premium to get a player who was cost controlled at a cap hit they perceived to be millions less than what a comparable player would cost them to add to their roster.

No one beat this offer now, after a career year. Why do people think Chicago was going to get more by holding on to the player?

You're basically looking at the same return down the road, except the picks are going to be in the 20th-30th/50th-60th range, not 7th and 39th.

Teams have sold off star players and gotten a lot worse returns. This is perfectly acceptable. If anything, Ottawa likely overpaid because they needed to make a splash. The next best offer may not be close to this.

Why would Ottawa drop from 7 to 16 AND retain Matt Murray's salary?

It never made any sense.

If you think about it, Dreger was just the mouthpiece for Dorion.

Buffalo would have no reason to acquire Matthew Tkachuk though. It's perfectly valid to think they would have turned that down.

You can't just go oh this player is this good. You have to look at the actual contract and real life dynamics. What purpose does it serve a rebuilding team like Buffalo to acquire a star player who is only signed for 1 year and only has 2 years of team control left? If they did that deal, they would be shopping Tkachuk right now. They would not net anything close to what Eichel returned them from Vegas. Which was Buffalo compromising what they want and taking a lesser package.

I absolutely believe Calgary would have offered Tkachuk, because they knew that he was unlikely to sign a long term extension before testing the UFA market based off how the Tkachuk's operate. It would have solved a huge problem for Calgary, because Eichel had term as a comparable star player. They would have offloaded their Tkachuk problem on to Buffalo. Now they are going to trade Tkachuk for pennies on the dollar, unless they get really lucky with Tkachuk willing to extend somewhere as a function on a trade. Even then, they may still get pennies on the dollar.

fair point... i guess something realistic not #2 overall + 2020 7oa pick + a solid D prospect.

High schoolers don’t do realistic. You should know this.

Ottawa should be able to easily pay the QO, if QO was a factor it actually makes sense for a team closer to the ceiling.

It's not so much about ability to pay, but their ability to sign him to a long-term deal. DeBrincat can easily sign his QO after this season, spend next season on a 1 year $9 million deal, and then hit his first year of free agency at the early age of 26 and drive his price up on the open market. Dorion obviously wants to extend him as soon as possible to avoid that potential situation.

For now. For all we know 7OA could be a bust and 31OA could be a great top 6 or top 4. Time will tell.

Trades don't work that way though. That would only make sense if teams had lifetime control over the rights to players. There is no guarantee Debrincat stays in Chicago, and it is very reasonable to assume he is going to leave based on the fact that they are entering a rebuild. They likely had some indication that he might not be interested in playing through a rebuild.

Estimating the future value of assets is absolute how trades work, especially when trading players for picks.

Debrincat wouldn't have been able to walk away from Chicago considering he's under contract for another year and would be an RFA after that. Only way out would be a trade (this happened), an offer sheet or for the team to not qualify him. The last option is the only one where Chicago wouldn't have been able to re-coup value and it's also something he wouldn't have had any control over.

Trading 7th overall to get rid of Matt Murray is fake news.

Darren Dreger just got played.

Nothing else to it.

Either Dorion was dumb or Dreger was dumb. Both scenarios are fine with me.

It most certainly was NOT a career year. He was on a 50 goal per game pace in the bubble and OVER a ppg...can't help that the NHL scheduled less games. And Please...2 assists different from his 2018/2019 season...career year??? It's easily arguable it was his 3rd best season out of 5.

My issue with the trade is that if you draft the #7 pick...odds are VERY likely that all you're doing is hoping he turns into Debrincat...which is extremely unlikely. It's not like they got much more. The #39 pick...meh. Not even another 1st or prospect? He said he wanted a top 10, top prospect, and NHL player. He got 1 of 3. I'd rather have the Hagel return than this.

https://www.nhl.com/news/2016-nhl-redraft-adam-fox-jumps-into-top-five/c-325630580

I mean just look at the NHL's redraft. Debrincat's the 3rd best player. Why would a known player get something worse that a magic bean? The #1 and #2 OA picks don't always pan out. Just should have got more plain and simple.

I don't know why but I have a feeling Dorion had a deal done with Chicago to give them 16OA with a better second asset (Prospect or pick) but when the deal fell through they just revamped the offer and called it a day. There's no way the went from one trade to another in such a small amount of time and have a deal done.

Like this deal for both teams. Market kinda set with Fiala returning 19th overall + Faber, this return is still a hefty price for a young player. Basically a better Fiala return for a better Fiala. OTT’s risk is obviously the QO next year which can walk him to FA but both teams still benefit from this trade. Assume a long term extension between 8-8.5M happens.

Pretty much what I thought he'd get.

Chicago fans were extremely delusional thinking they were getting 2nd overall + Holtz ++

Great deal for Ottawa

I agree with you guys - I think this is a fair deal. Sure he's a two-time 41 goal scorer at just 24 and that has a lot of value, but he's clearly been zoomed somewhat by Kane and there's also the contract issue as many have been pointing out.

Fair deal IMO.

Chicago should have at least gotten a Formenton, Greig, Sokolov or Jarventie in this deal instead of the 3rd. Weak sauce.

Holy steal for the Sens, you get a great 1st liner in Cat for 7 + 39 + a 3rd down the road, why cant Melnyk still be your owner, now Ottawa’s actually doing something

Ottawa got Debrincat for 7OA. They also control him for 1 more year at $9M after that. For a team that isn't playoff bound. I've calmed down and I still think Hawks could've/should've gotten 7OA + prospect AT LEAST instead of 2nd and 3rd round picks but honestly, if Debrincat only stays 1-1.5 years on Ottawa and they DON'T make the playoffs, maybe Hawks end up winning this one?

Every Sens fan owes Matt Murray a debt we can never repay. If he had been willing to go to Buffalo this could have been our future. Shout out Buffalo for being THAT awful.

well you have to judge a trade base on the value now. you could trade mcdavid for a 7th round pick and say we'll see and still technicly be right! but the thing that makes it hard to gauge is we dont know what rank those tampa pick will be yet.

I'm calling it now. Chicago trades 7OA and TBL 1st in 2023 to NJ for 2OA. They draft either Wright or Slafkovsky. LETS GO HAWKS!
