Yes and no (also no recapture credit)

Isn't Chicago getting hit with a penalty? They would owe ~7MM, no?

Also, any idea why Edmonton doesn't get the credit? I'm led to believe that since Edmonton paid less than cap hit, they get a cap credit since they had more cap than actual payment given, but I can't find the relevant sections in the CBA

Canes continue to be the only team that looks like they have any form of understanding analytics and prospects.

Pure value - and safe… how can you be upset with that.

Because the league said so. Arbitrarily. Because rules mean nothing

Honestly the NHL should even things out by dividing that between both teams

As the Hawks shouldnt be punished for it as yes they signed him but they did trade that deal

It should be 2.75mill penalty year 1 for both then 950k or whatever year 2

TBL gets Nick Malik, the Czech goalie (double overager) that had a very successful year in Liiga. Not a bad pickup for them, he can backup Hugo Alnefelt in the AHL next year (unless Alnefelt graduates).

Or he outcompetes Alnefelt and graduates in 2023

As Malik honestly could have the makings of an NHL backup sooner than we think

Probs wont see him to 2024 but we have seen surprises happen from time to time

We need more trades, today has honestly been kinda boring. Where’s the Miller trade? Kane? Chychrun? Talbot? Puljujarvi?

The only big names that’s been traded is Debrincat (and kinda Dach and Romanov).

By dumping all their good young players the Blackhawks are trying to force Toews, Kane, and probably Seth Jones to request trades and waive their NMC.
Then the NHL should force Joel Quenneville to coach this years Blackhawks for a $1.00 salary. That would be a worse punishment than banning him from him the game.

On the flip side, how many franchise records do the Avalanche, Blues, and Wild break this year with both the super-tanking Yotes and Hawks in their division?

Why? The recapture penalty is because the deal is back-diving and circumvents the salary cap. Chicago should absolutely have a cap penalty for that deal because Keith didn't finish the contract.

Edmonton didn't sign that deal and shouldn't be penalized for it. Whether or not they get the credit isn't an immediate concern imo

Cap recapture penalties exist to prevent super front-loaded deals (which I believe were further regulated in 2013) where the player makes a lot of real money in the first part of the contract, with some low money years near the end, when the player is retirement age, which served to lower the cap hit and basically ensure the player retires, while giving them more money than the salary cap "intended".

There's absolutely no reason for Edmonton to have any cap penalty, as they paid Keith 2.1MM last year and were in order to pay him 1.5MM this year, while taking a cap hit of ~5.5MM, much higher than the salary cap "intended".

Edit with numbers: Over that contract, Keith was paid 68.4MM over his 11 years in Chicago, and Chicago had a combined ~60.9MM in cap hit, so there's an excess there that, according to the CBA, has to be paid back (in the form of cap penalties). In Edmonton, however, he had 1 year paid at 2.1MM, with a ~5.5MM cap hit, so there's deficit that should have to be paid back in the form of cap credits.

I don't see the Wild needing to trade Talbot. He has 1 year left then Wallstedt will apprentice under Fleury. They have their entire roster set for the year except for who is their 13th/14th forwards and they have $1.5 million in cap space. They are basically already done for the year.

They will go for it once more this year; then next year face the "Matt Dumba" question which now comes at the same time as Matt Boldy hits RFA. With $1 million more in cap space, Talbot and Kulikov's contract expired they should be fine for the year as well. 2024-25 is when it gets really crappy with big UFA's due.

Except the fact that he basically requested a trade after Minnesota signed fleury yesterday…

This was the only pick we made today that I liked. And maybe the goalie, I don’t know much about him, but at least he’s huge. I have no idea why we took 4 LD.

You mean Chicago right? Why would either Cup-contender want him even with retention when you have Campbell and Kuemper available?

There are 2 contenders needing goalies and 2 big-time UFA's. It's pretty much down to that; now that Edmonton has cap space they might even trade with Colorado for Kuemper's 5 days of rights forcing Toronto to re-sign Campbell or start over with another goalie.
