Description
I like the tank, we will suck next year and hopefully a top-3 pick next year is worth the suffering. Should we have gotten more for DeBrincat? Probably. But this move is about the long haul and doing this right. My limited knowledge of the draft picks (at least Korchinski and Nazar) has me excited. Let's see this play out. Tough to see Kirby go, but I'm excited about Nazar. Tough day, but this is what many of us have wanted for a while, a true rebuild. This is what that looks like. More tough days coming soon I'd assume Kane and Toews are gone at somepoint, hopefully soon. Love those two, and sucks we couldn't deliver what they deserved (see: many stanbo bad trades). We'll be good eventually and truly back, not a playoff contender but cup contender (hopefully). 2 years from now I hope we're in a good place with a stacked prospect group. Then sign some players and steadily improve.

Being sarcastic. Hard to see the Islanders not making the playoffs, especially with Kane

But I have to have some sort of info about next year's draft when considering making trades that involve picks. So right now the intel says, hold on to pick and again for a 34 year old Kane who's a UFA next year. Definitely not worth it nor the risk. We haven't picked in the 1st round in a few years now. I'm keeping pick unless I'm blown away with a good young star.

Im not arguing the trade, just providing input on the draft

The return was light, maybe awful, but it probably has to do with DeBrincat's future contract decision not being made. If he had said he'd extend in Ottawa (I wouldn't lol) then maybe the hawks would've gained another asset. My point is I'm more interested in the fact this allows us to be worse, allows kane and toews to come forward and want out, which piles more assets that might not have happened. A lot of the assets we will gain started with this decision.

Ok guy. I'm not arguing with you anymore.

Look, I'm optimistic, that's my view here. I admitted we could have gotten more for DeBrincat, but I'm more interested in a top 3 pick personally next year, because look at the teams that were successful this year in the playoffs. Avs: Landeskog (2nd overall, 2011), (McKinnon 1st, 2013), Makar (4th 2017); Lightning: Hedman (2nd overall, 2009), Stamkos (1st, 2008) ; Oilers Nuge (1st 2011), Draistl (3rd, 2014) , McDavid (1st, 2015). You need a couple really high picks if you're going to be successful. That's not a debate. Is DeBrincat the number 1 player on a cup team? No. Maybe an elite top line wing to one, sure, but prioritize center and build out. You need an elite center, which trading DeBrincat might help achieve. Again, if Alex Formenton was added to the trade, is that really going to be the final touch to help us win the cup in 7 years? No. This was the right path. As for Mrazek, give me a 1st rounder for a 2nd instead of some late 2nd round pick in 2024 and a C+ level prospect. Was the pick smart? Maybe maybe not. Pronmann expected the guy to go in the first. This is the right path. If you wish we half assed the rebuild then so be it, this is my take.

You can't look at all the cup teams and not say they didn't draft well...it's a requirement including us last decade obviously as you pointed out. HOWEVER, look at all the tanking teams and how many haven't brought home a cup and it's overwhelming how it more often then not doesn't work. It's also an utter failure when you trade an elite 24 year old NHL player for a guy projected to be a 2nd liner...that's just a failure any way you try to slice it. Most of us here were okay with trading Cat, but it's got to be for the right package. Pinto + 7th OA, devils #2OA, etc. This is just a garbage return by a rookie GM who got fleeced.

I'm honestly just trying to be optimistic about our new path, maybe I'm blind to some of this because of that.

Trust me, i have been VERY optimistic about Davidson and this path all the way up until today. Today was a very bad day. Davidson did the exact opposite of everything he said he was going to do. He talked this huge confident game about not needing 1st round picks and not forcing anything and picking the best players and then they literally did the complete opposite of that this evening. I gave him every bit of my confidence and support up until i realized he was an idiot who talks out of his... butt.

Maybe i just need to sleep on it or accept that whats done is done. But if this is an example of what to look forward to, his rebuild will fail and the blackhawks will be awful for another 20 years.

I will say, I was absolutely shocked when I saw DeBrincat only drew a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Yes the first was 7OA, but still seems like an absolute fleecing by Ottawa. Then I realized that Chicago was also trying to move a 9+mil player next year, which puts it into perspective a bit, but still is shocking. The price also might have gone down due to the Fiala trade as well, but now the DeBrincat trade has really tanked any value held in Miller, Tarasenko, Pastrnak, Nylander, and others. The next few days should be very interesting though.

Slept on it. It was still an awful day. He chose to lie and act like he was dealing from a position of strength and consistently told us he had no reason to trade him unless someone stepped up and paid a huge price and that he wasn't going to force anything. Then at the last second he folded in a HUGE show of weakness and admittedly didn't even try to get more.

Don't try to sell me the "no one wants to pay him $9mil next year" argument. Every GM that made a bid knew EXACTLY what they were getting into and Davidson DIDN'T have to sell them on Cat's $9mil price tag. Dorion and OTT got the steal of the century and they know it. Both him and Dach are young and are better for a long term rebuild than what we recieved. CHI has PLENTY of cap space over the next few years and could've paid them and still retained cap flexibility, if for no other reason than to stay above the cap floor. He also went around telling everyone that he was not the same as Bowman and then turns around and gets fleeced just like Bowman would have... Probably even worse than Bowman would have.

He showed the fan base and the entire NHL that they can expect a weak GM that isn't gonna stand his ground and isn't going to make the right decisions under pressure. If he continues on the same trajectory, using the same tactics, we can expect another 20 years of mediocrity that will have implications that linger far beyond his tenure as CHI's GM. None of it will be conducive to "sustained success" or "doing things the right way". None of what they did yesterday was even close to being "the right way". They made weak knee jerk trades and then turned around and made huge reaches on every pick when there were MUCH BETTER players available. I know this because, even though CHI didn't have a 1st I still watched tons of scouting videos, games, and read tons of information about all the top draft eligible players and some beyond in the later rounds.

So, not only have they become an extremely weak organization on the hockey operations side showing zero signs of any light at the end of the tunnel, but they have not taken any real ownership of the Kyle Beach situation and made the necessarily bold public statements on what happened and how they are going to move forward. This organization is garbage and they somehow made it MUCH worse in a single day. Wouldn't be surprised to see the rebuild fail miserably and the Wirtz's selling the franchise within the next decade.
