Description
Man the draft started off nicely trading down in the 1st to pick up two 2nd round picks. Then it all went to hell after that, wow. Sharks leave a ton of talent on the board to pick reaches. Then trade a likely early 3rd rounder and Leonard for...Luke Kunin, a guy who hasn't done jack and likely doesn't get a qualifying offer this offseason. This is just a mess of a weekend. I wonder how much the passing of Marchment had an effect, if any, on their decision making this draft.

Actual draft picks through 2 rounds:

27. Filip Bystedt
34. Cameron Lund
45. Mattias Havelid

What could have been:

27. Brad Lambert
34. Ryan Chesley
45. Gleb Trikozov

What do people think of the Kunin for a 3rd and John Leonard?
My opinion is that Kunin is a guy who probably doesn't get a QO this offseason and the sharks could have just signed him as a ufa instead of giving up an early 3rd next season.

I think you guys did very well with Bystedt and Havelid, both of those guys will be studs and probably hit the top 50 NHL prospect lists in about a year or two. I’m not as familiar with Lund, tho.

Missed opportunity passing on Geekie, he’s going to be a superstar. Coyotes went out and did their thing last night, I was hoping the Wings took him at #8.

I don't dislike Havelid and Bystedt. Havelid went about where he should have, but Bystedt could have been had in the mid to late 2nd and they took him 27. Just is a stretch as the sharks usually do.

I don’t mind the kunin deal. Realistically kunin fits what we need. He’s only 8 months older than John. He has decent upside(last two years before this one was on a 20 goal 40+ point trajectory). He is also right handed. Something we don’t have a lot of.

The picks are what they are realistically. I’m not a nhl scout and my judgment on players is based off the two sentence reviews I read. The trade down imo was a awesome deal. Allowed us to add 2 2nd round talents from a draft that was pretty deep in that area. Hopefully the magic beans turn out.

your drafting is almost exact to my thoughts.
I was considering Lambert at 11 but ended up hoping for Mintyukov or Korshinski, when both went early I was ok with the trade, But when Lambert fell to them again at 27 I thought that was the Hockey god's with Marchment's help leading the sharks to their pick.. only for Grier to screw it up.
Bystedt has a few good tangibles but a ton of flaws and i see him maxing out at 14-15 goal 3rd line C but more likely a 6-8 goal 4th line center, why not instead take a swing at a potential grand slam pick?
risk takers win cups safe GM get asked to leave 2-3 years in. Grier IMO should be brushing up on his resume cause he will need it in a few LONG and frustrating years.
Really had higher hopes for him.

Kunin was a fantastic pickup, adds grit and toughness to the 3rd line and gives Bordeleau some protection while also still being decent offensively. Feel his addition spells the end to Labanc.

I this is more on the scout staff than Grier. The org didn't put him in a great position when they took so long to hire a GM. I loved the trade to pick up two 2nd rounders. Bottom 6 and bottom pair defenseman early in the draft doesn't make sense. They could of had a much higher ceiling and bigger player in Chesley over Havelid. I don't know anything about Lund so who knows there. I understand not taking Lambert at 11 with his question marks but at 27 it seems worth it. They took Merkley earlier than 27 in his year and he had many more question marks. Don't understand the goalie pick in the 4th, guy hasn't had any good numbers.

I see what you’re saying but when you’re talking about late first rounders and early second rounders, sometimes it’s negligible in terms of where they actually go in that range. Trading back might next you some extra assets and maybe you get that player you targeted but considering the marginal difference in prospects in that range, it’s far from a certainty. They liked Bystedt and rightfully so, he’s going to be a good player.

Yeah miserable weekend. If they were planning on pissing away three late 1st/early 2nds they should have just kept 11 and picked Geekie or Nazar. But no let’s make a bunch of reaches and pick a bunch of dudes we could have taken with our later picks. ****ing braindead.

Ridiculous Kunin trade too the guy is a scrub. Leonard w/o the 3rd >>>> Kunin.

I get if the scouts absolutely love a guy, go get him. I’m cool with that. But those are the 3 guys they loved and had to take? Makes no sense.

And that Kunin trade is terrible. I would guess he doesn’t get qualified if the trade doesn’t happen. Would of rather spent that package on a Strome or Zacha rfa even though I’m not sure either of them will be qualified either. They at least bring much more scoring depth which is very much needed.

Oh 100%. Like whatever I get it if you’re high on a player and you want to take him a bit early (although I personally don’t see the Bystedt hype) but jesus you don’t need to don’t need to use a 1st on a guy rated in the late 30’s at best. Most lists had him in the 50’s and 60’s.
