Genius Moves

Created by: TheGeniusGM
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 8, 2022
Published: Jul. 9, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Relieving cap, added a deeper bottom six while maintaining a similar d-core.

Gio is arguably better than muzzin at 1/5 of his price and less injury prone. Sandin deserves a bridge deal.

Ducks decline. Muzzin isn’t of value for ANA. Make it Sandin instead and that should be ballpark

I think he is still a useful dman on a fair contract. Wouldn't be the worst deal for the ducks alongside the picks. We all know gibson is being shown around the league too right.

As much as I actually like this team, like jded said, ducks easily decline that trade. Wouldn't give away Sandin tho. Just keep Campbell at that point. Costs less and younger. Also wouldn't sign PK. ARI prob declines too. Would prob have to give up a 2nd + 3rd. Keep the extra money from keeping Campbell instead of Gibson and PK or possibly use that for another depth piece, whether a 3rd or 4th line depth piece or a 3rd pairing dman.

How is trading for arguably the worst starter in the league over the past 3 years a genius move?

Everyone keeps liking him cause they think he's bounceback candidate, if he flops with Toronto his contract would be impossible to move.

He’s totally a useful defenseman on a contract that isn’t unreasonable. He’s also 33 and on a 2 year contract. ANA won’t be competing in either of those two years, so a player that will 100% be gone by the time they’re competing is not an asset to ANA at all. Rebuilding teams don’t trade future assets for short term veterans.

Yeah, bounce backs are only worth it if you can get em cheap, and gibson is expensive as hell in every way

Because he has star talent (literally been an all-star three times). If you judge a goalie by blindly looking at their save % then sure, he dropped off the last three years, which totally coincidentally aligns to when the ducks team went to crap and stopped playing competent hockey. Watch the ducks play and you’ll see it’s impossible for any goalie to sit back there and manage a .920 save % for a good sample size. It was crazy that Stolarz managed it at the sample he did, but if he played the sample Gibson did it would have been the same or worse. GMs will be smart enough to value him. If they don’t offer enough value, the ducks will happily keep him

To be fair he has had a negative GSAA according to href for the last 3 seasons, and same thing with money pucks Goals Saved above expected.

So there definitely a very risky choice to hope for a rebound for a new team.

I don't watch the ducks his bad is their D and defensive structure?

I disagree, and if it is, it will be not much higher. They are valued the same and it's bad for team morale to pay more to a dman in the same role.

Then why hasn’t the deal been done

I hear you and totally get why a fan would be concerned because his stats haven’t shined lately. He’s not a different goalie though, the ducks everything has just been garbage. Their structure offensively, defensively, everything. They give up a ridiculous shot volume and generate very few themselves. Have to be bottom 10 for both those metrics. With how little offensive pressure the ducks get, it really leaves the goalie out to dry to because other teams spend so much time in our zone

Gibby started this past year great btw. He had a .917, was 3rd in saves and 4th in starts at the All star game in Jan. Then the ducks moved all of their vets and he plummeted in front of a glorified AHL defense
