1st off, it's Kane for ONE YEAR, and that alone is enough to say no thanks. 2nd, why is Lundqvist the 7th D? Nemeth is gone soon and his spot is there for the taking for Jones or Nils if he can slide over to LD OR is Schnider can slide over to LD. He is only 20 and has a very high ceiling, so ZERO reason to trade him for any RENTAL. As to Nemeth, he can be traded or bought out without too much pain, so there is no reason to lose assets over his contract. Bottom line IMO is the Rangers don't need to pay for RENTALS like Kane and Miller. They can find better trades that benefit them for the long haul, not just 1 season.
I mean, who are you playing Lundkvist over? Your top 4 is set (Lindgren-Fox/Miller-Trouba) and Braden Schneider looks locked in as RD3. I get what you're saying about sliding him over to LD3 if you want but I'd think it makes more sense to stick with Zac Jones on his strong hand than flip a guy over to his off-hand - but even then you're talking about your 6th D instead of your 7th D, so I feel like that's splitting hairs.
Nemeth can be bought out, true, but he'll have a $1M penalty this season if you do that. Not the worst thing to work around but the Rangers are tight as hell against the cap this year and every dollar can be important - if you can get him off the roster in a trade I think it's a better move than buying him out (he says, as if he's imparting some arcane knowledge no one has ever thought of before.)
I get preferring to trade for a player with term over a rental, but name me one guy you can trade for that has term and fits the following criteria:
-$5.25M cap hit
-scored more than 75 points last season
I'll save you the searching because it's a really short list: Elias Lindholm, Robert Thomas, Jordan Kyrou. And Calgary & St. Louis are laughing you off the phone if you offer them Lundkvist/Kravstov/Nemeth/1st/2nd for those guys. And we don't need to discuss UFA guys because the only guys that came close to or exceed Kane's scoring were Nazem Kadri and Johnny Gaudreau, neither of whom is signing for around $5.25M. You're probably getting a guy like Vincent Trocheck or Rickard Rakell or mayyyyybe getting Andrew Copp to stick around at that price point - all fine players, but none of them have every shown the ability to be 90 point guys.
Again, I totally get not wanting to pay a major price for a rental, but this is moving a couple guys that aren't vital to your 2022-23 roster and bringing in an impact player on a discount for the full season. I wouldn't be surprised if Copp, Strome, and Vatrano all walked this summer and this is an interesting way to try and replace them.
