Would have thought they'd be able to extend him at that number for twice the term

I had him at 4 years @ $5.25M or 5 years at $5.5M. A bit high on the AAV considering the term, but not to the point where it can be considered a bad signing. I voted yes.

Why is every fringe top 6 player getting 5 million + nowadays?

Probably will not get 35 goals again but should still be a consistent 50-60 point player, good signing.

I thought they might have gone for more term, but I think it was smart that they didn’t. When a player is coming off an unprecedented year in his fifth full season, it’s hard to tell whether that was a breakout season and a sign of things to come, or just a one-time thing that he’ll never come close to again. The worst thing you can do in this league is to sign a guy who turns out to be in the latter category to a long-term contract that pays him based on the one good season. This contract seems to strike a reasonable balance between the potential risk and reward.

I feel like Adrian Kempe has been around forever. Then I look and he's only 25. Damn. lol.

35 goals is not fringe top six. Yes, only happened once but last year was his breakout season.

Are we sure this was his breakout year and not just a fluke? That's the question that needs to be answered before we can really judge this contract.
