Kuokkanen and Balcers getting bought out makes zero sense to me.

You'd think you'd get something for those assets, even if it's low picks.

I bet it’s going to be gardiner , prospect + a pick for Burns (2-2.5 mill retained)

Is Gardiner still LTIR, SJ wouldn’t want to take active cap hit money back unless they’re flipping it.

With guys like Strome, Kubalik, etc getting non-QO rather than getting traded, there might not be a strong trade market for depth players

They’re changing their entire make up. Balcers is a decent bottom 6 option but isn’t really special. He’s just okay at wherever you place him.

Grier keeps harping it - he had nothing against Dahlen but he wants to surround the Sharks stars with competitive and tenacious high tempo forwards.

So Kunin they’re betting on him shooting for 20g entering his prime with more consistent production and cleaning up flaws - adding work ethic and hits. And continuing that trend with moving Balcers.

I’m actually fine with moving on from Balcers. He played well but he ONLY had a role open for him on the 4th line. Balcers will get a job else where I’m with @justaboss that atleast I hope they tried to trade him and nothing came up.

Balcers can drive play at both ends of the ice and hes worth his contract, just not someone the sharks should let go IMO

Question for Everyone

This has got to be one of the most fluid RFA/ in qualified RFA markets in a long while no? Adding in some of the young buyouts - this is an incredibly deep talent pool for potential steals. A lot of these RFAs won’t surmount to much more then they already are; but a handful will be “how could they let this guy go” situations.

Oh I agree he’s worth his contract - I have to assume they tried trading him. He’s well worth nearly 2m.

I’d expect him to be claimed tbh.

Pretty much.

Sounds like so many teams are afraid of the arbitrating process as it could lead players to get overpaid, hence teams just decided to left go some good assets.

If your team had depth problems, this is one of the greatest summer for fixing those.

At least Balcers' buyout was cheap.

He costs 8k this year and 300k the next year lol

Well considering Kase could have made 3mill via Arb I dont blame some of them. But for these young teams with cap it makes no sense

I would not mind signing Del zotto to a league minimum contract. He's still a pretty good 3rd pair D.

i think its a combination of bad teams wanting to be bad for the upcoming draft and not wanting to commit $ to guys who may not fit teams' timelines

Teams are realizing you don’t pay expensive money for 3rd liners. Finally .

Actually I think this might lead to more 3rd liners being that expensive, with the likes of Mikheyev asking for close to $5M.

Now there's guys that were earning under $2M that have grounds to ask for $3M plus.

I doubt anyone gives Mik more than 5x1; I’d hesitate 3.5 x 5y but if he’d take I’d consider

Also with no cap movement last year, only 1 mil this year, and minimal changes till 2025. Hard choices need to be made
