Using an Actual Precedent from All of 3 Days Ago

Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 10, 2022
Published: Jul. 10, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Going back in history into the mists of time (all the way to Thursday), Toronto moved from #25 overall to #38 overall (13 places, but at the top of the draft) and relieved themselves of $3.8 million in cap hit.

Here, Ottawa moves back what is in all likelihood 40 or more places to relieve themselves of $3.125 million in cap hit, and Toronto gets a pick in the #33 to #48 range.

I'm not sure how Kyle Dubas would fill the roster out, so I've left the last two forward slots open.

I'm betting Dubie signs former Soo Greyhounds legend Nick Cousins. He'll likely only cost 2 years/1.5 mil AAV. I could also see Dubie signing backup G Comrie for 2 years/1.5 mil AAV. I'll also predict he'll sign new UFA Colin White. Not sure what he gets.

Nice idea, that could essentially be like the Leafs getting a first+Murray for a late 2nd since the draft is supposed to be deep. Perhaps the Leafs give up a 4th as well so that OTT doesn't have to eat up all the cap by themselves.

I don't think this is how the trade would go down but it's at least realistic and makes sense for both sides.

I don't think he would pay Cousins that much but I'm sure he would go after Comrie (is he also a SOO legend?) and invite Kallgren and Woll to camp. White is on a ton of teams radars and Leafs are surely one of them, I think Dubas would offer a 1 year 900k-1m. If he misses on them all then maybe Cousins does get 1.5m or even 2m lol.

He probably signs at least one (but perhaps two) of: Strome, Domi, Marchment, Kubalik, (would depend on if Engvall who got qualified and Kase stay). I expect the rest of the spots to be filled with AHL guys looking to make the jump.

You’re clearly lost on the idea of a real NHL trade
