Wouldn't have made sense for Ottawa. Buying him out would have ended up being cheaper.

Buying out would cost 10M. Retaining half would cost 7.5M.

the real winner here is connor brown bc everyone thought he was going back to the leafs, but instead he'll be playing in the 2nd round with debrincat and stutzle this year smile

This is definitely a win for OTT, if Murray performs well then it's a win-win. Dubas is betting it all on Murray though, if this fails, he's probably gone. The good part is that Murray's contract expires at the same time as Matthews and Nylander's. They should have paid up to get some more retained by a 3rd team but who knows, maybe the ask for that was ridiculous.

Wow... Dubas messed up badly here... I thought it would be half retained...

Would have had to have a 3rd team, but guess they couldn't find someone to retain at a reasonable price.

Well, this is it. I've been a Leafs fan for about 10, maybe 11 years now, but I can't take this stupid trade. The team had so much promise with their core, but acquiring Matt Murray seals the deal. The trade could've been better! I really think it could've been! But Kyle Dumbas doesn't know how to work the phones properly and he got ****ed hard by Ottawa. This stinks. I'm packing my **** and going to Arizona where they know how to run a team. Nice knowing you.

You had me believing until Arizona lol. Anyway, we shall see what happens with this. I was hoping for 50% retention. Right now this is Dubas loss. But I guess we’ll see how it plays out.

Id bet Murray bounces back before Mrazek but still not great odds. OTT wins this one.

I’m not biased but Murray is still a top goalie in the league smile sure he’s had lots of injury struggles and we know he isn’t the same as he was in 2016-2017. But I hope this can be a fresh start for him to bounce back strong!

People say it's a cap dump, but it's not. The Leafs want to play him. So it's a W for the Leafs, though 50% retention would have made it clearer.

Karma: the universe's restorative justice for past acts, whether good or bad. Example: half of the Toronto fanbase sneers at the proposed acquisition of John Gibson because "he's been bad for three seasons," only to end up with Matt Murray (who's save percentage averaged out over the last three years is under 0.900) instead.

I hope BOTH goalies rebound this season.

Kyle Dubas is not going to make it to this time next year. What a joke.

This is exactly why I approved of the Murray contract in the first place: If the contract didn't work out by the time the Sens were ready to compete for a playoff spot, Murray could be dumped at a relatively minimal loss and the team was nowhere close to the cap ceiling.

From a Leafs perspective, I don't approve. Murray is always hurt and wildly inconsistent when healthy. They're a top tier team. Can they really afford such a gamble? They'll never win the Cup with average-slightly above average goaltending. They're not COL.

I would have rather kept mrazek. Now I get to hope Murray rebounds. Sigh....

So the Leafs HAVE to make deal with Chicago with to get out of Mrazek's 3.8m X 2, by trading out of the first round. OK I get it. Then they really get nothing by spending almost a 1m X 2 MORE in cap by acquiring Murray.
Couldn't the Leafs have found a goalie for much cheaper and better than Murray? Whoa, this appears to so bad for the Leafs.

Sens win overall, but I still don't no why it makes sense for either team.
