What would it look like if Bettman didnt love to screw Edmonton

Created by: tdobes3
Team: 2022-23 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 12, 2022
Published: Jul. 12, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Imagine if Bettman didn’t take the extra 3.4 mil of cap space away from the Keith retirement.

The NHLPA should definitely have fought for this as it’s taking jobs away from players.

Carolina has said they want to improve their RD with Deangelo leaving. Oil will retain that amount for year one and 750000 for the remaining years after.

Canes definitely pass. Give you a second for Barrie with retention and drop the pick going back our way. Otherwise no thanks.

now imagine Edmonton not screwing themselves by having a competent GM. That is the real problem.

Changing rules in the CBA on the fly. Edmonton should get a cap bonus for Keith retiring.

Can you dumb it down for me? Admittedly I’m not familiar with whatever CBA clause you’re referencing but why would oilers get extra cap bc Keith retired? You get the cap space and CHI gets the recapture penalty, isn’t that supposed to be how it works?

the retirement of Keith would have given Edmonton 3 million in cap space the way the math worked out with real dollars versus cap dollars. That wasnt the intention of the rule. The rule was there to prevent teams from front loading deals and penalizing when they do, hence Chicago's cap recapture penalty. Not give a team cap credit. So no cap credit. It is pretty easy to understand unless you believe the league is there to bail you out for terrible cap decisions year after year (*cough edmonton fans*.

The effect of the rule change is to shrink the overall money available to the players, which the NHLPA should be concerned about.

It's just one of a long list of things the league has done to make life harder for the Oilers. From changing the draft lottery rules to taking picks away for hiring a GM & coach to prorating Neal's goal total, etc.

The original sure but the PA didn’t seem to mind when they agreed to it. At the same time the league hasn’t policed the abuse of LTIR so the money is still there

Idk seems like it’s less about protecting the players and more about getting added benefit for the team based on different intent of the actual rule and argument of the language if the rule.

Seems like it’s a stretch to say that the nhl is screwing the oilers over with this or with any of the other things mentioned but if that’s what you want to argue go for it.
