So yesterday I was messing around with the contract comparables and learned a few things:

a) If Malkin hit FA tomorrow, his contract would've unprecedented. No point per game player with over 1000 points as hit FA.
b) The closest match was Elias, who signed for a contract at 8.55% of the cap at 37. Today, his deal would've been just over 7,000,000.
c) Malkin is a much better player and two years younger, meaning 7 million would've been the minimum he should've commanded on an open market. Makes this contract a steal even if he doesn't play it out.
d) I'd say the most he could've gotten was something like Datysuk's contract at 34: 11.88% of the cap. That's 9,600,000 today.

They’ll help us get to the floor and still provide veteran leadership for any top prospects we inevitably pick

You think Poulin will get his chance any time soon?

Lol he sucks. I’m talking about future top prospects we haven’t drafted yet, like in 2025, 2026, etc

Michael Misa yeah I believe he’s 2025. Eh it’s possible. I’m thinking we’ll definitely be competitive 2022/23 and 2023/24.

After that, will get very interesting

Was hoping for the Putin Line:
Kuz Geno Pod

Geno quickly found out the market wasn't going to beat this I'm sure.

Why was their last GM fired if the new one just extend old glories?

Pens are like Caps and Leafs: big stars that sell ticket but lack the depth to translate regular season success in playoffs wins.

He wasn't fired, he walked out on the team.

Not to say Im disappointed but kind of wish we went a diff direction

Kind of was hoping Trocheck would be the new 2c and we would make some intriguing changes around Crosby keeping some guys but switching others

I know he’s 35, but still a point per game player. To get him for $1M more than Rakell and less term either says a lot about how good this contract is, or/and how bad the Rakell one is

Rather have Trocheck, but not bad. Much rather have Malkin at 3 years and $3M+ less than Kadri. Probably a B- signing for the Pens.

Pittsburgh has made it clear the next 1-2 years they are going all-in with 0 regard for the years after. So this contract fits their plan. Geno gets the term he wants and Pittsburgh gets to contend for the short term.

This right here is what Ovi and Backy prob should have signed for. Gives the team a good bit more cap to work with. And, how much $ is enough for these guys anyway? They've already had their big contracts. Anyway, Letang and Malkin are good signings. And, as pointed out by several posters on here, if they don't age well then just finish on LTIR.

Loooool they won 3 cups with this core man. Will they win another? Probably not. But winning 3 cups in the salary cap era is very impressive and they’ll remain competitive for the remainder of Sid’s time in pit

The Crosby era is undoubtedly a massive success. I seriously can’t believe you tried to compare them to the leafs lol
