Is Copp a true viable 2C? It's complicated, but the contract is still solid, particularly its length.

I don't think so, but the Wings were real real thin at Center. Pius Suter was not the answer and Veleno isn't ready for that kind of role

I like Copp, hometown kid as well. I would like Vatrano as well, we need people who are willing to just fire the puck at the net. This team is too pass happy at times, especially on the PP

I'm kind of surprised at all the yes votes here. Copp is a good player, don't get me wrong, but I see him as much more of a high end 3C than a bona fide 2C: something in the 4x4 range would have been my top offer. Considering the way the voting went when he was traded to New York, CapFriendly people seem to have flipped on him in the last couple months— no coincidence there, he played very well with the Rangers. I just think people have gone a bit too far the other way here.

However, Yzerman doesn't tend to make many mistakes, so we'll see.

I know I'm in the minority here, but this seems too pricey and for too long given his upside.

He really needs to prove he had the offensive game to be worth this much. He has one year above 40 points (53 last year). He's a good swiss army knife player and good on the pk. But he isn't a big hitter and his even strength d is average.

If he continues to be a 50 pts player it's a good deal. If he regresses back to 30 something points it's an overpay.

I will say Detroit was the right team to make this gamble

I'd much rather have signed trochek for the same aav but two more years.

Why better than trochek? Trochek hits more and is a truer c, and way more proven offensively

Term. 7 years is bad. Trocheck has been on the decline the last few years. Injury history.

Oh I thought you were comparing the players not the deals. I disagree with your analysis but understand it. Carry on smile

Can someone explain to me why they think copp is such a stud instead of a good but not special player?

He's not particularly physical
He's cracked 40 points and 20 goals a single time each
He's great on pk but not special at es defense.

He seems like a slightly better at c version of kerfoot who is uniformly maligned at 3.5*4 through his prime
