Tampa Bay Lightning signed Erik Cernak (8 Years / $5,200,000 AAV)

Was this a good signing?

Actually a great contract. He's a mid pairing defender and this is their going price.

Contract isn’t bad per se, but cap situation in Tampa is terrible.

No. Too much money for too long. Unless the cap is going up by $25 million in a couple of years, this is a bad deal.

That Sergechev contract will come back to haunt them, but their core is all locked down and they will remain competitive until Hedman/Vasilevskiy is gone. I'd even argue they can afford to let Stamkos walk.

Trading Stamkos next offseason is going to happen so they can afford all these contracts. May not have an option.

Does Tampa know something about the cap next year that no one else knows? They are already under $5 mil available with only 13 players signed

I guess this means Stamkos is leaving, when looking at this and the Sergachev contract.

Why would he? He's currently earning $8,5M and given he's 34-35 when his current contract expires he's not getting a raise.

23-24 cap space, they have virtually none and still have to sign Colton and other players to low-cost deals.

I thought for sure at least one of Cirelli, Sergachev, or Cernak would be moved and not re-signed long-term. How much longer does the team honestly think their contention window will be open for?

Point 26
Sergy 24
Cirelli 24
Cernak 24
Vasy 27
Kucherov 29.

Probably 5 years ish.

So that would be for the front halves of the 3 new extensions. I guess that makes sense

Big cap hike coming in too (2025ish if rumors are to be believed) that Cirelli deal is probably gonna age like wine. The Cernak one will age like, I dunno, cheese?

The Sergachev one is going to age somewhere between wine and milk that expired last week.

Does TB know something we don't?

Is the cap going up by 10M next year? The hell is going on?

There are talks about it going up 10mill but that supposed to be in 2024 not 2023 so I have no idea how they afford all this

Unless the NHL once again breaks profit records and can do a 10mill increase earlier than expected I have no idea what Tampa's plan is

Maybe Stamkos retires or something idk

Stamkos has a full NMC and has stated he'll be a bolt until at least the end of his contract. They can't trade him . They can't buy him out because of his contract structure. He only gets $1,000,000 in salary meaning only 667 k in cap relief you can't sign a minimum replacement player for that.

I guess at least you have the significant cap raise that can help

He is worth at least 4.5M on the open market. Somewhere between 4-5 is basically minimum wage for a top 4 D as a UFA. Add in that he is right handed, and has physicality and size.

In the short term, they would have been better off keeping McDonagh. Long term, Cernak at 8 is better, because half way through this contract there will be a major adjustment to player salaries, and he'll be underpaid by 2+ million. The COVID escrow is 2-3 years away from being paid off. Once that happens, the cap will shoot up. Cernak and Cirelli will be underpaid when that happens.

It reminds me a bit of the Killorn extension. Where if you read reactions to it, a lot of people felt it was high at the time, but as the cap increased it was fine because the term was long enough to allow the contract to deflate under the rising cap.
