The reverse uno to end all reverse unos. Goddamn it, why didn't the Sharks hire Jarmo for the GM role instead?

This is probably the most unexpected turn of events in recent NHL history.

It all depends on how quickly Johnny requests a trade out of CBJ - if its within the next 3 years they will get a plethora of picks back, but if its later in the contract, they will have to pay to get rid of him.

Of course they arent winning anytime soon.

Gaudreau: doesn't sign with the Flames to sign with the Winnipeg of the States

I mean, it’s not exactly like Detroit, Pittsburgh, or Jersey are that far off.

Admittedly, though, those cities have Cups.

Let’s be real though - Johnny apparently left $15M-$18M on the table to sign this contract with this team. Idk what magic Jarmo had, but he did something special here.

Prior to today, the biggest UFA get in CBJ history was probably…

*checks notes*

…Nathan Horton?

If they move Nyquist's deal they can have close to $9M in space available for Laine. Not sure how many takers out there for him but maybe one of NJD/NYI/Philly throws a late round pick for a consolation prize of a decent player in his walk year.

They have over $10 mil from moving Nyquist. The roster is counting 26 players at the moment.

Guys like Carson Meyer, KJ, Chinakhov, are all waivers exempt. Gaunce would probably clear waivers, and be a non-hit. Expect a few of them in CLE next season.

Blankenburg will likely be a cap-hit around $1M.

Nyquist, possibly Robinson, and maybe Bean are the likely guys to get moved, imo. Particularly if they think they can keep Laine for a decent contract, you could see some combo of those guys getting moved for cheap. Frankly, if I’m a team in need of (1) A M6 winger; (2) a solid forechecking B6 guy; or (3) an offensive B4 LD, now is the time to call CBJ and probably get them for cheap.

Tarasov is counting against the cap right now too. After doing the math they actually have $5,729,167 in space currently after Meyer, Gaunce and Tarasov are moved to Cleveland. Just trading Nyquist would get them to $11.2 mil in space and they easily sign Laine for under that number.

a confusing decision. you'd have to pay me a lot more to live in Ohio

Not like it’s much better in either New Jersey or Pennsylvania

Contract is right for him, but I don’t know why he didn’t go to a cup contender.

Good on Johnny for getting paid. Good on Columbus for signing a prized free agent.

Wow, he must have really hated Calgary. He left a lot of money on the table in Calgary with the thought of going "home" east coast and he just travels south/east a little. Poor Calgary, what a slap in the face. Next will be Tkachuk.

Yep, Robinson is a Blue Jacket for the foreseeable future now haha. He's a great 4th line guy though so it's not an issue at all. Only reason I've proposed moving him this off-season would have been to get all the young guys development time. This clearly isn't a team that's focusing on development first now.

Great contract for Columbus, but I think this day belongs to Carolina!

If you are the best team in the metro and you hear Gaudreau is coming to a rival like the Islanders or up and coming devils, this has to be a bit of a win since Columbus is still not likely a playoff team with Gaudreau.

Not expected, but you know what, good for Columbus, getting a star player to stick around.
