Pretty risky deal considering he hasn't had a 20 goal season in a while.

Damn. Heard the Bruins were in on him too. Devils could offer him more $$$ and term.

Good signing for NJ. Clutch player that Tampa will miss.

He has. Only once, but he has. Many years he didn't, though, he was on pace for 20+ at an 82 game rate.

Good for the devils on a roster stand point, at a money stand point yeah no. Gonna be 36 at the end of this and just overall too much money for what he's worth.

Seems one year too long for me.
I get the sense this is a contract the Devils are gonna have to move before it's up.

I like the move. He's a good veteran player to help the younger guys on the team. AAV might be a little high, but as long as it's not over $6million I think that's fine.

If he regresses by year 3 or 4, then you can just buy him out.

The main goal was Gaudreau, but he decided to take a deal with Columbus, so New Jersey went with palat as a backup option.

The main thing about ondrej palat is he can do the dirty work on the top 6 and it's a nice two-way player, you may not realize he's there, but that's why palat was so good in Tampa.

31 y/o complementary winger signed for 6m x 5 aint good business

They missed on Gaudreau so they felt they had to get him a replacement, but a wiser decision would have been to give that ice time to younger players. NJD is in no hurry to be competitive

Good luck 79 games a year ondrej i almost voted no because this isn't a good signing for NJ it's a great one

Every lightning foward wanted Palat as a linemate especially Point and Kucherov according to Jon Cooper

The term and hit are a little higher than you'd want to pay a 31 year old but I also think he makes a ton of sense as a veteran presence on a Devils team with a ton of youth. Huge upgrade in the top 6 and can play all over the lineup if you need him.

Scores a ton of key goals in the playoffs, too - might not be a guy who regularly scores 20 in the regular season, but scores at nearly a 30 goal/82 GP pace in the playoffs. Not a bad guy to bring in at all.

I think the cap hit is okay to poor. Term is poor.

I think if he wasn't on Tampa he's a 4"4 player. He's an okay first line winger or good top 6 winger. Good at everything but doesn't really excel at anything and the wrong side of 30.

He just doesn't seem a difference maker to me. But he is a good compliment to good players.

I suppose he's a good vet likely for their youth up front
