Still Need A Top Winger

Description
trade proposal for the top LW spot. Columbus got JH but now they do not have enough cap to keep both him and Laine, unless they move out other pieces. Fitz should take advantage of this. I think it’s a fair offer. Ty Smith can turn it around (wasn’t CHL dman of the year twice for nothing), Sharangovich can really shoot the puck and is on a team friendly deal. Top it off, a 1st round pick in next years draft (which is deep apparently).

Although we got Palat, he’s a 2nd line winger at best. He doesn’t produce strong numbers in the season.

Still think one of Tatar or Johnsson get moved out. With just the Palat signing, it pushes on of them out of the lineup. My money is on Johnsson leaving.

I don't think Smith is what CBJ would be looking for. We have Bean already at the bottom of our LD. We have Christiansen who is serviceable in a 3rd pairing role and we have Mateychuk coming up in a couple of years.

I think we'd much rather give a look at Dawson Mercer.

That being said, CBJ will move Voracek/Nyquist/Bean/Boqvist before trading Laine for assets (unless he wants a ridiculous contract, but Jarmo doesn't seem bothered yet).

I would think the package would be closer to Fiala return, right?

Mercer would be a none starter for me. Very promising rookie year. Seems to be a solid top 6 contributor sooner than later. Since other comments are saying “overpay”, why not just take Smith out completely? Sharangovich and a 1st for Laine?

So 1st and a Brock Fabar type prospect. I admittingly don’t know much about Fabar but my best guess would be putting shakir mukhamadullin for that trade? 1st and Shakir?

Big overpay for Laine

Guy can score 30-40 in this league. I don’t see it as an overpay. While I love Sharangovich, he’s a middle 6 scorer. Smith IMO is god awful. Trade him while his draft and post draft pedigree are still relevant. You can argue about the pick though.

Guy can score. Not awful for NJ. What’s awful is Fitz thinking the team as is can compete. Every team (not Philly) has improved in the Metro. Islanders can still outpace NJ so there’s that too. We are looking to be legit in the same spot we were last season. 30+ points out of the playoffs.

That works, or Sharangovich and Muk. Laine scores, but that’s about it- he’s a negative player in all other aspects. Fortunately for CBJ, and unfortunately for NJ, that one skill is pretty darn important

Just no trade then. Laine was PPG last year with still learning the position centermen (Roslovic, Jenner). He's scored a historic amount of goals U23 and added a strong playmaking element to his game last season.

You don't get this type of player for parts and risks despite his flaws. You need to give a high quality asset to get a high quality asset.

Since Sharangovich arrived in NHL:

Rango: 40g-36a-76pts
Laine: 36g-41a-76pts

Laine has the longer track record and better per-game stats, but is also one of the biggest defensive liabilities in NHL, a notorious floater, and clubhouse malcontent.

Is it worth giving up a 1st round pick, the top dman in last years Calder race, and $4-5m in salary a year for a handful more goals?

Move out one (1) other piece - Nyquist, who's only got one year left on his current deal - and we can afford Laine easily. There's no more pressure to trade Laine now than there was 48 hours ago.

uh

this is a wild cherry pick

Sharangovich = 76 points in 130 games

Laine = 77 points in 101 games

That's including a season with a dog**** coach and terrible linemates.

If his personality is so bad you probably shouldn't want him on your team either way.
