What's wrong with the Canucks?

Created by: CanucksRocket10
Team: 2017-18 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: May 14, 2017
Published: May 15, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Canucks were one of the only teams in the league without a Defenseman with more than 30 points. Stecher lead the team with only 24 points. This is just too little offense from the back end. They could go after the most offensively gifted UFA available in Shattenkirk with a long term deal but this would be a mistake for a team in a rebuild. Markov and Streit (both powerplay quarterbacks) had over 84 points combined in only 68 games. This should give them some offense they clearly lack. 1 year deals will make them great chips to filp at the trade deadline. They are also both over 35 and eligible for performance based deals.

This may sound good with the well known names in streit and markov but this back end looks really slow. Would not put up much offense.

Markov has put up great numbers his whole career on a Montreal team that hasn't been all that fast or offensively gifted. He will be fine if he stays healthy. The point is, it should be an improvement over what they had and they don't have to give anything up to get it. Even if they only get 50 points out of these guys combined it'd be a huge step for the Canucks who had one of the leagues worst power plays.

Two 39 year old Dmen on a rebuilding team...makes sense.

You have a chicken and the egg scenario regarding lacking scoring points. Maybe the defence has so few points because the # 1 line of Sedin, Sedin and Ericsson had so few goals and points.

Haha I sense some sarcasm. It does make sense for a rebuilding team if the term is only a 1 year deal. The Canucks hopefully get the powerplay quarterback they need. Hopefully it works and they put up some decent numbers while mentoring young talent like Stecher and Hutton. Canucks will still not likely make the post season and they flip these guys to a contending team for picks or prospects. Win win for all parties involved.

I hear what you're saying but speaking as someone who has watched this team every game through this last painful season, this is definitely a problem. While a lot of the Canucks D look good, none of them have shown much offense. Tanev, Edler, Tryamkin and Gudbranson are more defensive. Stecher and Hutton may have potential but they're unproven and are not capable of running a powerplay, at least not yet. Jolevi doesn't look to be that guy either. The Canucks tried to plug this hole with Larsen last year and it totally failed. If it still doesn't work with proven NHL offensive d-men, then I'd have to agree with you but they won't know until they try. In this scenario they really have nothing to lose and everything to gain. The alternative is to keep doing what they're doing.

Lack of overall scoring from the FWD's, combined the 2nd worst PP (32 total PPG) in the league makes it hard for d-men to pick up assists. Van only had 5 players that played over 72 games, so there isn't a lot of consistency in the lineups. The lack of depth hurts a lot too. There isn't the 3rd/4th liners putting up goals in the teens to help even out the lines. So teams can just focus on shutting down 1 line most nights.

Good puck moving d-men would help some of the scoring woes, but most of the goals come from the FWDs putting the puck in the net. Having Burns or EK on defense wouldn't have gotten the team into the Playoffs.
