I’m curious as to why Ottawa would do this? They’re basically giving up Formenton and Brannstrom for a rental in Weegar. I just don’t know if that’s the type of asset management Ottawa is after.

It would have to be extended. But ottawa saves cap longterm as Greig replaces Formenton. I don’t think we can afford Formenton longterm but Greigs ELC lines up perfectly with the Giroux contract

With Brown gone moving Forms is putting a lot of pressure on Greig to step up immediately. He may be ready for that but if he isnt youre opening up a hole on the third line that may not be filled this season. Would hope that Ottawa could find a way to use the draft picks theyve held onto to facilitate the top 4RD hole.

I see what you’re saying, and think the extension would make sense. I just would be a bit weary of Weegar being 28 already and looking for a long term deal. I feel like Ottawa is on the right path now, and should stick to developing their guys and adding through FA.

I feel like people are overvaluing Weegar. Ottawa might be better off targeting Montour or Gudas instead tbh.

Ideally Chris Tanev makes a ton of sense if they were willing to move him. 2 years left and then JBD/Thomson would move into the top 4 after starting on the 3rd pair

COL isn’t doing that. Branstrom is a reclamation project at this point and Formenton is a 3rd line dude. Girard is at worst a top 4 dman that scores 30 pts and is locked up for half a decade. I mean ffs Chiarot a rental got a 1st, 4th and prospect and he is half the player Girard is.

Formenton is 22 and had 18 goals this year . Ppl assume this guy just hit his ceiling already which is pretty crazy to say

So Girard is 24 top pairing capable, put up basically the same points as Formenton who in COL is basically a 3rd liner period. You aren’t really trying to sell me on Formenton upside as to why COL would give up a 20+ minute a game puck moving dman locked up for half a decade are you? I mean I like the kid especially his skating which would be a nice match, but come on Girard’s contract alone is gold.

Replace Formenton with a draft pick/prospect. We need him on the pk.

Because they have Toews and Byram as their top 4 LD now and have no cap to sign any UFAs like Kadri which would make them a better team.

That’s just what a bad GM does. Makar, Byram and Toews at 23, 21 and 24 are arguably the Avs d coro anchors for the next decade because they aren’t going to able to re-sign Toews. Regardless of that dman of Girards caliber don’t get traded for cap space because if they need to the Avs will roll Newhook at 2C.
