What I have to assume is the plan from Dubas

Created by: leafs101
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 15, 2022
Published: Jul. 15, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I would've hoped to see some changes but I understand the idea of running back (minus the goalies apparently which, I somewhat understand too. Jack was very inconsistent even though he did show up in the playoffs, Mrazek was bad, and this option keeps the longest committment to 2 years.)

I suspect this is along the lines of what he's thinking. At the start, 4th line is Robertson plus whoever else claims those spots. At TDL, he gets an offensive 3C, brings up Knies, and has a younger scoring threat line with his two most touted winger prospects. I can sort of see where this is going now. He's going to keep the band together as much as possible.

Could also move Kerfoot to 3C so that line has a more defensively sound player with the young guys and have Domi's chippy style go with JT and Marner.

Mayfield added, maybe Sandin comes out for him or maybe he doesn't even need to be acquired, depends on what happens in season but figured I'd leave the cap for that sort of acquisition.

Why would Buffalo help Toronto out?

to acquire another pick in a year where they won't be making a playoff push... same reason rebuilding teams do deals like this all the time.

    I highly doubt that

But if that's the case we just go for anotehr D with a similar cap hit, wasn't really the main piece to this

Leafs are a division rival. There's no reason to help them out for a 5th. Odds are that pick will never play an NHL game.

Chiarot got a 1st. So can Mayfield with that dirt cheap contract.

nobody cares that its a division rival when its for a rental that the Sabres would never see in any playoff race. Why wouldn't they want to collect a pick? Another team would do the same deal, doesn't have to be Buffalo, but division rival goes out the window when the deal has zero impact against your team

ok then we don't do that trade and find someone else. But I don't think Mayfield is quite as valuable as Chiarot/Manson/etc from this TDL

He’s better than Chiarot and Savard and they got firsts contenders will be lining up for Mayfield with his contract

The Sabres are gonna be just over the floor. I can see ownership/management signing off on taking some cap on for something meaningful. A fifth wouldn't do it.

Sabres are going to be good very soon. I just don't see them helping out a hated rival like the Leafs.

Agreed. Late round picks are practically worthless, if you are attaching a dollar value to it. I like to think that a mid first is worth about 5 million dollars of real (and cap) money. Maybe a second round pick is worth half that, a third probably half that. That's what I would pay, that's what makes sense. This idea that "you should spend your money to do us a solid and you should take this worthless thing back and be thankful for it" is ridiculous. I think Ron Francis was getting shat on by other teams, and naturally the nhl media- for not taking garbage back to help teams that felt entitled to help from a team with cap space. Never give something away if you can make them pay for it.

Exactly. Give Buffalo a reason to help Toronto out. Otherwise screw off. The NHL doesn't exist to help out the Leafs. Entitlement is an accurate word to describe Leafs fans. Help us out! We're the Leafs! You have to! Uh no we don't.

Remember last summer when Dubas tried to outsmart Holland and get a 3rd for Hyman's rights? How did that work out? Leafs got nothing.
