Possible Weegar trades

Created by: Joxu
Team: 2022-23 Florida Panthers
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 16, 2022
Published: Jul. 16, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
My idea of what Weegar's value could be considering he's one of the only top 4 RHD's possibly on the block with a cheap contract.
I suspect Florida wants a 1st because of their last TDL where they sold both their 2023 and 2024 1sts. The second piece coming back should be somekind of a young top 9 winger.

Which teams accept and which teams decline?

I'd need like a top 5/10 protection to feel comfortable moving Ottawa's 1st, but I'd probably do this. Trading Formenton for that top 4 D makes sense from an Ottawa perspective.

Honestly, this may be the best post if possible destinations for a player I’ve seen in a long time, all reasonable trade for each side in each deal

Would FLA do the VAN trade if the 23 pick was lottery protected? If Canucks miss the playoffs it becomes 2024 1st, but then maybe that means an extra late pick gets thrown in

          ie.
          Weegar for Hoglander, Conditional 2023 1st*, Conditional 2023 4th**.

          *If Canucks miss the 2023 playoffs the 2023 1st becomes a 2024 1st.
** Pick is only transferred if Canucks miss the 2023 playoffs.

So basically the trade is either Hoglander and a 2023 1st (Pick 16-32) OR Hoglander, 2024 1st (any pick), and 2023 4th (NYR).

Only way Adams would do that is if Weegar signed a good extension. There would have to be top 10 protection on that pick Id imagine. Would suck to give up Asplund, Id much rather trade either Johnson or Portillo in that package if Florida is interested (Portillo prob not with Florida's net full)

          Buffalo won't be moving their 2023 1st.

Not ready yet. A 2nd pair RHD isn't moving them into contention.

I could see that working, would Vancouver be willing to take on Hornqvist's contract in return for the lottery protection?

Canucks not trading a 1st. Benning would have done it but he’s gone, so no.

At the moment, no, not enough cap space. Canucks management seems to think Myers is actually worth a 2nd so they're (obviously) having trouble clearing cap. If they somehow do that then I don't see why they couldn't take on hornqvist, or at least majority of the contract

I think Ottawa got a lot better, Detroit got somewhat better, and Montreal just picked first overall. This division is an absolute buzz saw, the Sabres are certainly heading the right way, but I expect another tough year, weegar doesn't push this over the top.

Not all of these trades are built equally. Would take Forms over most of theses other players. Would hope that theres another way to facilitate a Weegar trade without giving him up.

As much as I want Weegar. Sabres laugh at that.

People on the outside may not realize but Asplund is very valuable to the Sabres, we also won’t be moving the 1st

So maybe we trade Mittlestadt/ Rosen/ Jokiharju along with 2 seconds or something like that

I mean I don't see it, actually I think losing asplund hurts playoff contention more than upgrading lybushkin or joki, with Weegar.

In the Atlantic Tampa will still be very good, florida might take a small step back but will be very good, I think Maple leafs are a wild card whether they improve or not, but they will still be top 3, Boston takes a step back but will still battle for 4th. I think Ottawa has the next most complete team but defense and goaltending still questionable. I don't think Detroit is going to be that much better from their signings but their young players should take a top forward. Then buffalo plugged some holes and are hoping their young players take some strides. Imo Power playing a full year helps l, I think asplund has a more productive year as will Cozens. My sleeper is Mittelstadt who can hopefully drive a successful 3rd line. And then Comrie hopefully provides good goaltending. But a lot has to go right. At best they fight for that 4th spot in the Atlantic, maybe 3rd if one of those teams get hurt and everything pans out buffalo's way. But I don't see how Weegar changes much

Buffalo made some really good moves thus far this off season.
But losing Asplund and adding Weegar would not make them playoff team.
After watching the playoffs, Buffalo does not have the Star power of the other teams.
Presuming Boston cannot over come a bad start with McAvoy, Marchand and Grzelcyk expected to miss half of the season, Ottawa has made the moves that will allow them to jump over Buffalo.
Ottawa finished only two points behind the Sabres and added Talbot in goal, Giroux, and DeBrincat up front.
Who on Buffalo will drive a line as well as Giroux, Norris or Tkachuk can?

This not to say Buffalo could not make the playoffs, but there are a lot of IFS for it to happen.
Okposo, Skinner, Thompson, Olofsson, Tuch, Girgensons all need to match or exceed last year.
Mittelstadt, Cozens, Krebs all need to take that next step and demonstrate that they are ready to play a 200 foot game.
Dahlin needs to be a Norris finalist while Power and Quinn are Calder finalists.
Finally, Comrie has to have a career year.
One more item, no one can have a devastating injury.
Last season the opening line up included Bjork, Caggiula, Eakin, Hagg, Miller and Pysyk.
Replacing them with Quinn, Tuch, Krebs, Power, Lyubushkin, and Fitzgerald will certainly make the team significantly better.

This pretty much sums up my thoughts. I think buffalo needs to just continue what they are doing. It sucks that it probably means no playoffs this year maybe not next either. But I would rather have cup contention for years to come when the window in the east opens rather than make the playoffs sooner and have a worse team in a few years.

Definitely sucks since the team has been bad for most of the drought. But the Atlantic has been stacked

For Weegar? Anybody would. Weegar is a stud.

In the right circumstances sure, some teams would. The Canucks aren’t close to being competitive, so this type of trade 1) doesn’t fix their problems 2) doesn’t fit their timeline. Alvin simply won’t do this. Maybe as part of a Miller trade, or some other forward, but it will have to be a money in money out type deal.

At the moment, no, not enough cap space. Canucks management seems to think Myers is actually worth a 2nd so they're (obviously) having trouble clearing cap. If they somehow do that then I don't see why they couldn't take on hornqvist, or at least majority of the contract

Oh theres no way they move Asplund in a Weegar deal, it probably be Jokiharju, in which Weegar is an upgrade and solidifies the Sabres D as the clear front runner in the division
