Devils get a legit top four dman for a d prospect who’s been struggling. I think that the devils win this trade

They give away John Marino so they can sign Kapanen. Galaxy braining.

Is Marino worse than I thought? ... Or not worth his cap-hit?

Is he just another example of Pittsburgh giving every d-man that walks by $4,000,000 x 6 years?

I haven't seen much of Ty Smith ... But I've seen every NJ fan blast him into the sun in AGM's because "he can't defend".

Trade makes no sense unless another move is coming...Zucker for Petry??!

Struggling because he was playing for a bad team, defensively. You can't develop a prospect in such context. But his offensive numbers were good enough. I think the trade is a win/win.

Both teams win here. Pens got a good prospect with good offensive numbers and upside, and still got some cap space. As for NJ, they got a solid top-4 d-man. As a Pens fan, I like it.

PS: Thanks for your service, Marino.

Don't know why NJD needs Marino, but overall the Devils win.

Guess I'll get destroyed today for this trade, but in 3 years time people will be praising me for being able to see what Ty Smith will become.

I think this is a Huge W for Pittsburgh, not only are they saving 3.5 Million in Cap Space for the short future, they also get the better player LONG TERM.

AT BEST this is a fair deal... and thats if Smith massively improves.. ATM Devils killed the Penguins. Penguins keep trading talent for magic beans and hope it works out. imo this is the time it bites them hard. traded their best assets for a sizable downgrade and a meaningless pick

If GM of the year voting was actually fair, he’d be the early favourite this year.

I just don't get why they downgrade on an important position when their competitive window is the next 3 years? I would say Marino is more important than Kapanen.

This is a fair point, but who's to say they're done? They are now cap compliant and Ty Smith is a good trade chip at the TD (worst case)

Nemec, Hamilton, Hughes, Severson, Sieganthaler, Graves and Casey is a stacked dcore wow

No, cause this probably means Severson hits the market, and Hamilton wasn't even that great last year

Smith is getting real close to bust territory imo. Even if Sullivan can so called "fix" him, I'm not expecting a whole lot from Smith

There's no way he doesnt have value around the league. Sens fans have been clamouring for a top 4RD trade and he was held in similar regard to Weegar/Chychrun. I refuse to believe this is the best that Pittsburgh could get for him. Has to be something else at play.

I pray so lol

Penguins got Marino for a 6th a few years ago.
Turned that 6th into a decent prospect and a 3rd

This trade made Pittsburgh's defence a lot worse while it made New Jersey's defence a lot better.

Pittsburgh should be receiving either a low 1st or a high 2nd.

Like when Winnipeg swapped Jacob Trouba for Neal Pionk.

Instead, Pittsburgh is only receiving a 3rd.

This is not good enough for Pittsburgh.

New Jersey wins the trade.

We win this trade easily. Smith is 22, two years younger than Marino. He already has better offensive instincts. Those are a given. He's also coming into his third year. He was ALL ROOKIE two seasons ago. He has never played on a good team and is coming into a great environment to improve. Marino was super overrated. Anyone that doesn't think so doesn't watch the pens. He had a good rookie year and then has fallen off every year since. His contract was terrible, all things considered. I'm glad he still had value around the league, but Smith has a legit shot to be a top pairing heavy minutes guy, or at least top 4. Marino has already hit his ceiling. Our cap looks better and so does our long term cap. Big time. This was a huge W for the pens. Hextall is having himself quite the offseason. Now let's just hope Jarry/DeSmith can get the job done when it matters for once. This will be their third year as the top 2. We have to win a series this year. And we have to beef up our blue line a little bit. Marino's cap hit off the books is a boon to our chances. It's going to take some more to win more than one round but I have faith. And Smith's ceiling is way higher than Marino's at this point in their careers.

Will Erod resign? What about Heinen? Who else will we move before training camp?

Come on Hexy you got this
