Smith is getting real close to bust territory imo. Even if Sullivan can so called "fix" him, I'm not expecting a whole lot from Smith

Man, you're so pessimist. The kid is just 22. He shows good skills offensively and can improve defensively playing for Sullivan. As I said, I think this trade makes much sense for both teams. Specially after we get Petry. We'll see in the ice...

At first, I thought the Devils won this, as they got the better player and didn't give up much. A prospect that isn't doing great and a 3rd is very little for a player that will make an impact this season. However, that player is arguably being paid too much, so they gave up assets to help the Penguins earn some much needed cap room.

Fair trade.

Of course I'm being pessimistic, the fact that such a high former draft pick like Smith has had as slow of a developmental path as he has I think is very disconcerting. Just have to give up at some point that maybe he doesn't pan out after receiving as much opportunity as he's already gotten

I honestly like this trade more for Pittsburgh a lot because they acquired a 3rd rounder in such a deep draft. Marino a bit better than Smith, but I think Smith has some good potential and could be solid in Pittsburgh. Of course New Jersey gets Marino to stack up their right side, but I think that Pittsburgh wins in the long run.

I'll miss Marino being in a Penguins uniform, but I also hope that Smith will be able to find his footing here in Pittsburgh.

As of now, the voting is

NJD 75 (68%)
PIT 17 (15%)
Fair 19 (17%)

I have no doubt the PIT number will rise.

Ty Smith will be a solid player in this league.

I think it could either way.

For real 😮
But now we still have 9 NHL D Tho…
I have a feeling hextall thinks rutta, Petry, and friedman can all play the left side lol 😂
Rumour is they are not high on POJ so I wouldn’t be surprised if he was moved for a young forward

Hell, if that was what it took to get Marino, why didn't Columbus get in on these sweepstakes instead of blowing their cool on Gudbranson?

Still laughing at that Gudbranson deal. The funniest is CBJ fans galaxy braining it while saying Gaudreau would only come to Columbus if that pylon was on the team. Paying a bottom pair D over 2M isnt a good idea. 4x4 is laughable

haha yea this was probably the worst deal of FA so far. I actually like the player but that term plus amount is just off. I feel like there's a clause in the contract that says "if johnny factors in on my points, I have to give him part of my game check" or something that like, siphons some of his money to johnny's. It's just way to much for way to long. Dude's high in points in a season is 17! He's probably going to reach 700 games before he gets to 100 points. Like... yeah he's big... but holy ****. Dude is the DEFINITION of a defensive, bottom 4 guy, and yeah, unless they're next level good or young this isn't the type of deal you should be giving someone with that skill set.

Why did I think this would end badly for the devils before the season ended

This trade was great for the Devils, but I think from the Pens perspective, it needs to be viewed with the Matheson-Petry swap which happened at basically the same time.
Pens got rid of a bad contract in Matheson, downgraded from Marino to Petry, moved up a round and got Smith, Poehling, and cap space instead of paying to dump Matheson. Smith replaces Matheson at negligible cap; he doesn't replace Marino. Petry is the Marino replacement. Not great, certainly, but cap space makes teams make moves they don't want to make all the time.

Guess I'll get destroyed today for this trade, but in 3 years time people will be praising me for being able to see what Ty Smith will become.

I think this is a Huge W for Pittsburgh, not only are they saving 3.5 Million in Cap Space for the short future, they also get the better player LONG TERM.

I failed to see that Pittsburgh doesn't care about developing and always play the win now guy. I'll eat my humble pie on this one and say **** Pittsburgh for ruining his potential.
