Tank for Bedard

Created by: Ghost789
Team: 2022-23 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 16, 2022
Published: Jul. 16, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Sharks need to be a bottom 3 team next season so they can get into the lottery mix for #1 overall. They’ve never had a #1 draft selection ever. This would completely change the franchise.. much like Crosby, Ovi, Stamkos, McDavid, Matthews have done.

Couture's combo of age and contract length is an immediate non-starter for Buffalo. At 33 with 5 more years at $8m, he will more than likely:

    - Regress sooner than later
    - Be an expensive contract to move once that happens
    - Tie up cap space when we have so many young, talented players to pay in the upcoming years

The momentary short-term improvement is not worth all these downsides. And that isn't even considering losing a 2nd in a deep draft and a great playmaking center prospect.

I’ve seen GM’s make worse moves… If the Sharks could move Burns contract @37 years old.. they can move Couture for little to no salary retention @33 years old.. He’s always been a 50-60 point guy and a proven playoff performer. Maybe it won’t be Buffalo but I’m sure many teams who would consider him.

They can trade him but they will not be getting a return like this back. 16th overall pick in this years draft and second and in a deep draft for cap dumb. Not happening.

I think Calgary is more likely than Buffalo at this point. It might be their last ditch effort to stay competitive. I think the sharks would have to take a contract back though.

Yea I mean they were about to pay Johnny G 10M + per season.. so Coutures 8M AAV gives them more breathing room while still adding a reliable 1B Center who has proven playoff stats and success.
