Created by: ML16
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 18, 2022
Published: Jul. 18, 2022
Team: 2022-23 Montreal Canadiens
Team Explanation
The roster would actually be the opening nigh one of the following season, notwithstanding however the likely addition of a top-5 pick at the 2023 draft and a G situation re-assessment depending on Price’s future.

Trades
1.
MTL
  1. 2023 2nd round pick (PIT)
Dadonov @ 50% salary retention to ANY contender/pretender looking for a veteran winger for their playoffs run.
PIT
  1. Dadonov, Evgeni
  2. 2023 4th round pick (PIT)
2.
MTL
  1. Girard, Samuel
Additional Details:
Colorado sheds Girard’s salary (replaced in the top-4 by Byram) in order to prepare for MacKinnon’s renewals talks. In return, a (hopefully resurging) Drouin with maximum retention as playoffs rental : a (hopefully convincing by then) Harris as a promising young cost-controlled LHD and two draft picks in a draft where Colorado has barely any at this time.
COL
  1. Drouin, Jonathan ($2,750,000 retained)
  2. Harris, Jordan
  3. 2023 2nd round pick (PIT)
  4. 2023 4th round pick (MTL)
3.
MTL
  1. Dubois, Pierre-Luc [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Once Dubois’ trade value drops to a 1 year rental next offseason, a deal can likely be struck around a slightly better package than (late) 1st + A Prospect.
WPG
  1. Dvorak, Christian
  2. Ylönen, Jesse
  3. Smilanic, Ty [Reserve List]
  4. 2023 1st round pick (FLA)

Drouin doesn’t have trade value, especially not Sam Girard trade value.

Get rid of the taxi squad. That's not happening.

I much rather have Girard going to Montreal than PLD

I postulate - however unlikely it is - that Drouin redeems himself in a contract year and becomes a worthwhile TDL asset at 50% retention, especially with his history with MacKinnon. I also postulate that Harris steps up after an encouraging first couple of games and becomes a young, viable, cheaper, 3rd pairing to let Byram take Girard’s spot on the top-4.

That’s a lot of IFs, but it would be a creative way to use Drouin, LHD prospect and expandable picks to fetch a defenseman under reasonable terms for the rebuild.

If Drouin pops off and has a perfect season, he would be a great rental on the market. But that’s unlikely for the player Drouin has been in his career. And even if that happened, you’re not getting 4 years of Sam Girard for a rental. At best you’re looking at a pick or a prospect.
