Marinos prior asking price

Description
First, I'm well aware that Marino will be no longer included in the Canucks plans. But something interesting that came up was that the Penguins wanted Jack Rathbone and a 2nd for Marino rather than Garland.

Before Marino was traded, many fans here who posted in their threads included the idea of a one for one swap in Garland for Marino. In that scenario, the Canucks would benefit from getting a RHD which the team needs while the Penguins (correct me if im wrong) would benefit from having more secondary scoring other than Crosby and Guentzel.

In an article I posted, it mentions the Penguins wanted Rathbone and a 2nd round pick for Marino. But the Canucks decline considering it's too much for them to give up

Article here: https://theprovince.com/sports/hockey/nhl/vancouver-canucks/canucks-taking-trade-swing-for-john-marino-wasnt-worth-plausible-price

Just curious would you do that trade, or the usual one for one swap in Garland for Marino.

Marino played at Harvard on the same team as Rathbone.

Points in the last column
Rathbone stats:

2018-19 Harvard University ECAC 33 7 15 22
2019-20 Harvard University ECAC 28 7 24 31

Marino stats:

017-18 Harvard University ECAC 33 2 14 16
2018-19 Harvard University ECAC 33 3 8 11

Looking at the stats I understand why Allvin wouldn't make that trade. Rathbone has untapped potential at the NHL level, and he had more points than Marino while being 2 years younger. Its probably better off long term to let him play and develop, maybe let him QB the 2nd power play. Maybe his value increases significantly to the point where the trade would be Rathbone for Marino and a 2nd. TBH I would have been happy with that trade in the moment, but we might regret it big time long term. In terms of our roster though we have OEL and Hughes locked up long term at 15 mill and they are both offensive guys, so unless OEL can play the right side, Marino would have been perfect for us currently.

I don't mind how it played out though, I like Rathbone and want him on our team. I would have done Garland for Marino in a second though.

Honestly, I think we could have gotten Marino had the Pens not done the Montreal trade with Matheson being traded. But I guess they wanted to go younger in Ty Smith and Ryan Poeling. so it does make some sense.

On the other hand, I would agree with you that trading Garland for Marino while keeping Rathbone at the same time is the same thing I would have done.

He would have paired with Hughes surely but it would have been awesome to see a Rathbone Marino 2nd pair. Everything would be so different if Benning didn't trade for OEL and Garland. We would have had tons of cap space in free agency this year too with Loui, Beagle, Roussel coming off the books. And would have had Guenther too. Such a stupid move he made.

Short of playing some Harvard reunion team with Rathbone, Marino and Walsh, I don't see the Devils having much interest in this move.

Garland would likely fit more of a need for us over next few years, but would also have to be moving one of Johnsson, Tatar to make space.

If you're mentioning about the Canucks wanting Marino from New Jersey, I'm not really talking about that. Rather I'm talking when he was still in Pittsburgh, before he got trade and threads here put Garland for Marino as a good trade, but the real asking price for the Canucks was Rathbone and a 2nd.

On a side note, Garland would be a better player for New Jersey since getting Tkachuk seems like a very high price that probably includes Holtz, Bratt, Shakir and a 1st etc.
