2 options remaining

Created by: Hullsy09
Team: 2022-23 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 21, 2022
Published: Jul. 21, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Option 1: make a trade to open cap space. Could be zucker, pettersson, Blueger as the most likely options. Mcginn, POJ, and Dumo could also be moved. Hard to speculate on a move because there are so many possibilities, but trading a D for a forward makes a lot of sense.

Option 2. Role with this team. Friedman and smith are sent down (this is the team shown below). I know what everyone is about to comment: “OMG THE BOTTOM 6 IS SOOO BAD”. I think have been seeing this every where. I think it is a overreaction. Carter, Blueger, mcginn, and Kapanen have all proved they can be effective bottom 6 players. Do these players have their flaws? Most definitely. Can you argue some of them are overpaid? 100%. But they are AT LEAST average players for their role. Next is O’Connor . I think it is a very safe bet to assume O’Connor is ready for a full time bottom 6 role - whether that he 3rd or 4th line. Based on what we have seen from him I think most would agree with that. This leaves one spot in the bottom 6. This is where a calculated risk is, where management would be assuming one of Poulin, nylander, poehling, Zohorna, archibald, caggiula, hallander, or Puustinen will be able to effectively play that role. I think it is a good bet, because there are so many options that could play it. And there is little to no risk because if none of them can play it there is room for a move at the trade deadline.

Let me know what you think about the two options and my take on the bottom 6 if we were to go with option 2

We need to move on of the $4M defensemen. The Kap deal was horrible to say the least.

Our top six still needs another winger...Cannot depend on Zucker or Kappy

Only problem with sending Friedman down is that he will need to go through waivers, and I have a feeling he would get snagged. I think he is a very useful 6/7.

I think someone for sure gets moved. Hextall wouldn't risk one of them going on waivers. Have to think a trade is coming very soon or lined up. I'm way more concerned about Zucker in the top 6 then the bottom 6. There's tons of young guys who can fill in there, but if Zucker is hurt or plays bad then that will really hurt Malkin. Him and Malkin had no chemistry, neither did Malkin and Rakell even. I'd put Rakell on top line and then Rust and a new winger on second line.

Only Friedman goes through waivers, smith doesn’t have to

I have a funny feeling Hextall is gonna trade one of Blueger/Dumoulin soon. I just do. I feel like management doesn’t value Blueger the way we do and knows that other teams see value in him so he could end up being put in a trade package for a forward in that case. As for Dumoulin, he’s a vet with 2 cups in his belt and is a serviceable dman, teams will call for those type of guys. I could see the Sharks being a suitor as for their very weak left side and the cap space they have available.

The Kapanen signing wasn’t in our favor but I expected that tbh. He better bounce back or I wouldn’t be surprised to see him moved at the deadline.

Definitely a bit of a risk but I think everyone is sending down Friedman level players at the start of the year

I could see Blueger more than Dumoulin. Reportedly the original offer for petry was Blueger and pettersson. I think you are bang on saying this management isn’t as high on Blueger

I really don’t think the Kap deal is that bad. Was hoping for about 500-750k less but still he would have gotten more had he won arb

To add onto my last comment, I think Poehling is now seen as the 4C if Blueger ends up getting moved. They traded for him, so they must like him - obviously.

Would even be ok moving out Blueger and Dumo as package for another winger.

Could roll the Defense as follows:
Ruuta - Letang - Rutta played with Hedman in the playoffs for Tampa
MP - Petry - Petry said he wanted to play with a more defensive d partner
POJ - Friedman/Ruhwedel/Smith

As an example you could package Dumo and Teddy to Kings for Iafallo - Just an example. Team would be this:

Jake - Sid - Rakell
Iafallo - Geno - Rust
Zucker - Carter - Kap
MGinn - Poehling - Archibald/Nylander

Ruuta - Letang
MP - Petry
POJ - Friedman
Extra battle between Ruhwedel and Smith

Very good.

Smith won’t be an extra though. If he isn’t in the top 6 he will play in WBS

Yeah I could see Smith going to WBS just for the fact he is waiver exempt still.

I saw that, I think it makes a lot of sense.

Not sure if LAK is still in on pettersson though. I saw a report saying they may be putting on of their RD on the left side

I feel the exact same way. It really feels like no one is safe besides the core guys. I think Bluger is a fairly likely possibility along with one of the D like POJ.

I agree with this cause apparently Poehling is much better as a center than a winger. I honestly think he is the replacement

Which forward do u want most in a trade involving Blueger POJ any of them. Some that I like are Lindholm (would cost more tho), Mangiapane, Taffoli, Barbashev

I could see us looking back in a few years and calling Lindholm “kessel 2.0”

I think so too, it would feel exactly like the Kessel trade, the big move that starts a cup run
