Description
Trying to be as non-biased as I can be. Really am mixed on Hextall at the moment and feel it could go either way. If he upgrades the forward core, I would call the offseason a success. I am worried though about the teams age. Just so tough to say. Here's the grades I'd give him so far:

McCan trade- D
Losing Tanev- F
Erod and Heinen signings- B
McGinn signing- C-
Boyle signing- A-
Carter extension- F
Rakell trade- A-
Letang contract- A+
Rakell contract- A-
Malkin contract- B
Rutta signing- A-
Marino trade- A
Petry trade- A-
Kapanen signing- D-

Dude get's an A from me, I don't think anyone thought Letang and Malkin would both be back.

He knows your window is 2-3 years, so who cares if the team sucks in 4-5 years if it keeps the competition window open now for some of the best players in the game.

Someone Kapanen has become the most overhated player on earth. Did people think he would sign league minimum?

You forgot Rust extension. I don’t see how Marino trade is an A. He just brought in another defencemen we didn’t need. I like the Petry trade after that but the Marino trade has me scratching my head still

Most of these are fair but I gotta know how the Rutta signing gets an A-. And how the Rakell contract is graded better than Malkin's

I feel like Pens fans turn on our players really fast. It’s ridiculous. There was so much of us valuing Marino and then after the trade there was many of the same people to throw him under the bus. I just don’t get it. Last year was pretty much the same with McCann. Plenty of us wanting him to stay and then he was traded and suddenly thrown under the bus by Pens fans.

Erod and Heinen contracts deserve an A. $2.1 million for 37-39-76 is a homerun. Don't see the bottom 6 producing like that this season. Although Erod was bumped up when Geno was out, but he still produced, the first half.

This is a sentiment I share. Far and away my least favourite part of this fan base. It honestly makes me sick.

Every single move we over-react, pick apart, and cry about. We could trade teddy Blueger for Connor mcdavids at 50% retained and people would find a reason to cry over it.

Why didn't you make any trades? Am I missing something here?

I was thinking 2-2.5 mil on a 1 year prove it deal then bump the pay up next season if he does well

I mean I think the disappointment over the Kapanen contract is warranted. I don't hate the player at all, I actually really like him and wanted him back. I just think overall if you have a really poor job performance one year, but have potential, it's better to go with a 1 year prove it deal. He was very poor at times last year, but he could bounce back, it's a gamble that can go either way, but I don't hate the player at all. I would love to see him reach his potential this season, I was super hyped when we traded for him. The Marino trade I was open to trading him before it happened, I think it was the right move. I think you can like a player but also see that it might be time to move on. Overall, I think the team needed a shakeup this offseason, regardless of whether I like every move, I appreciate that Hextall made changes. At the end of the day, I think a lot of people can be very reactionary, but it's also good to have different opinions and disagreements. It's all in good fun and at the end of the day were all Pens fans and hope they do well. To me it's just super fun to make mock trades and rosters, regardless of whether I'm right all the time

It could go either way, but I think it will prove to be a great deal. Ty Smith I think has huge potential and was just rushed onto a bad team before he developed. Tons of Devils fans I talked to said they wish this deal didn't happen

I'd give him a B-/B overall. Personally I can see both sides, I love the shakeup on defense, but I'm concerned with bottom 6 and how old the team is. I have a feeling another move is coming though

That's fair - re-signing Letang, Malkin, Rust and Rakell is an obvious A+. The Rutta signing, Kapanen signing, Archibald/Caggiula signing, and not addressing the bottom 6 issue pulls that down a lot. I'd have him in the C+ range so not far off

It isn’t that I don’t like Smith. I liked what he brought so far in his career. But it’s the fact Hextall leaves POJ left in the dust again by bringing in Smith. The way I see it we need that defence of Pettersson to take the next step to get him on the PK. Ruhwedel probably loses a spot in the line up now after having a strong year. With Ty Smith coming in he for sure gets a spot over POJ. It would end up being too much to put either Smith or POJ in a top 4 spot with a Pettersson trade if that’s still a thing that might happen. If there was a move that should’ve happened Hextall should’ve just traded Marino for draft picks if he had that Petry trade in place.

Thats fair, I think everyones takes are very valid in here and I see where everyone is coming from. I think we all agree that there is another move coming/should be another move made to help the forward core.

I honestly don't think there is haha - but I'm hoping he proves me wrong. I don't think they have anyone with enough value to get a good forward - and at this point there aren't many FA options left. At this point he's basically hoping nobody gets hurt Zucker, Dumoulin, and the entire bottom 6 have better years than last year. That's a ballsy risk

The Rutta signing to play third pair - I just can't get over it. Valuable cap space that was so desperately needed for a forward spent on a position you don't need. Ruhwedel was an excellent 3rd pair RHD
