I mean it was always well-known that Hockey Canada was pompous and complacent, and didn’t actually care about developing talent like the Americans do with the USNTDP or even some of the smaller European nations, likely out of the misguided sense that because Canadians love hockey so much and we’ve always been the best that it will remain that way, but to not even be able to react properly to sexual assault allegations is preposterous and unacceptable for any organization, let alone one as large and influential as Hockey Canada. If you’re getting multiple per year, any logical person would think that the solution is to set up mandatory training sessions for players and staff at the bare minimum and enforce accountability (and also maybe don’t serve minors alcohol just because they won a gold medal?????). I thought it was past time Hockey Canada got an overhaul purely from an on-ice focus. At this point they might as well scrap the entire organization. Clean house and get some intelligent people running the process, rather than just *generic old white male who has been around forever*

People like Rick Westhead and Katie Strang (one of the writers on the deep dive piece on this the Athletic published this morning and who was also on top of the Beach stuff) in particular have been excellent this year, we’re truly blessed to have legitimate journalists with integrity working on important stories like these. Bringing stories like these to light is painful but necessary as it’s how we change hockey culture for the better, because right now it’s toxic and elitist at the best of times. Shoutouts to Dan Robson, Ian Mendes, Emily Kaplan, Mark Lazerus, and Ken Campbell too, I think they’ve all been covering this + the Beach story. I think there was some good coverage from the globe and mail on this Hockey Canada stuff as well.

Most of these guys were from the 2002 draft which was pretty lackluster beyond the top end talent. Rick Nash and Jay Bouwmeester might've been on this team but they were full time NHLers already.

Upshall, Lupul and Bouchard were top 10 picks. Eminger and Gordon were first rounders. Most of these guys either flamed out during the post lockout years or had very brief flashes of prominence. Bouchard and Lupul were supposed to be very good talents but injuries really ruined their careers. Derek Roy was very good for many years in Buffalo but once that team went into it's decade long rebuild he couldn't find a place elsewhere and ended up in Europe. The assortment of Leafs prospects really amounted to nothing, but Stajan had a respectable career in Calgary.

Not going to speculate on who did what, but Jordin Tootoo wrote a book and outlined that most of these guys were getting a lot of female attention during the tournament. It's really unfortunate but it's also not surprising, given how ugly our country's youth hockey culture is once you pop the hood. Hockey Canada should be gutted and entirely restructured.
