I don't think it is that terrible.
On a vacuum the amount they paid is massive, but the assets they gave up were peaked pending UFAs with terribly expensive contracts coming, or irrelevant assets for a contender.
If you ask me now do I take a 29 year old Huberdeau and 28 year old Weegar for one year over 24 year old Matthew Tkachuk at same cap total the answer is obviously yes. But if you ask me the same question in 3 years time, would I take a 32 year old Huberdeau and 31 year old Weegar with 6 years left in their contracts at total cap of close to $20M dollars, or a 27-year old Tkachuk at half the price, I'm 100% taking Tkachuk.
And this is assuming CGY actually is able to keep those guys, which is far from certain.

Terrible for Florida? Really? It favours Calgary for sure, as they got arguably the better player AND major adds. But taking contracts/term into account, Florida comes out pretty good. Anytime you get a 100 power forward for 8 years in his prime with a reasonable AAV you are not a loser. It’s just that Calgary won more. And Florida is getting the safer package too: Calgary could end up with only Swchwind and a 2025 first in a years time. Personally I like it a lot for both teams.
Yeah I love the trade.
It’s something that the NHL could use more of.
I know everyone’s saying it he “NBA BLOCKBUSTER” of the NHL and it is. It’s also like most are saying; one of the biggest trades in decades.
But I think while many people are screaming too loudly on one camp:
“Florida overpay; they could lose 3rd/ WC to Ottawa”
And what not
I do think Florida really is making a smart, high value move. Huberdeaus attitude/ future seemed in question as many think he’s ran out of time in Florida and also; do I really think Huberdeau’s aka Erik Karlsson 2.0, contract is going to tasteful? Weegar is again; looking for the pay day.
I respect both players going for the bag so let’s see them cash in; but I think Huberdeau was done in Florida and Florida was done with him.
I do like Weegar depending on the contract. I think he may be reasonable to keep as Calgary. If Calgary keeps both I can’t really blame them either -
I don’t think many other teams could have handled two different but hazy paths better. Calgary was literally imploding online and Brad even said it; it’s a **** hand they got dealt. But Treliving - made a bold and interesting call that deserves more respect to be put on his name like I’ve been harping. And Zito; a real risk but different situation, is betting on Tkachuk and that’s a decent deal they inked. And betting on Tkachuk is just as good, if not better, than others like Bratt, Kyrou, Meier, Gaudreau.
