In a vacuum, this is an excellent deal. However, in reality, CBJ have way too many forwards and they are over the cap if they don't put someone big on LTIR.

It's still a good deal, but not excellent.

Frankly, i'm not sure. I want Columbus to be good bc I love parity in the league. But their cap situation is a little hesitating. 8+ for Laine, Gaudreau & Vorechek each is risky business imo. I would have to think Nyquist will have to be the cap relief to ANA/ARI

Laine gets paid pretty well and gets to free agency in his prime at 28, setting him up for a big payday. Columbus locks up the player for 3 FA years.

Wonder what the Jackets going to do being way over the salary cap? A trade is going to have to happen now.

Trade Nyqvist to AZ. With Ladd retiring they need AAV to meet the cap floor.

Gotta do it quickly since other teams are looking for same

So does CBJ officially win the Laine-PLD trade?

Yeah CBJ pretty much super won the deal for Dubois.
Not that Dubois is by any means bad, Laine though is a game changer imo.
CBJ won the trade as it stood from the get go, and even more so now considering the current situation with Dubois.

So is Voracek the odd man out now? his cap hit off the books is one of the few one for one type deals that will be them back under the cap ceiling.

Calgary can't understand why all of the sudden Columbus can lock up their stars and they can't. Look for Laine to have a big season.

The AAV is good for both sides but it would've been nice for CBJ to lock him up long, long term. I give the. deal a B-

MASSIVE SIGNING W!

8 years at a lower cap hit would have been massive. This fits somewhere in the middle. Compromise I think.

After seeing what CBJ did to shed cap space, I would like to take back by "Good" and lower that to a "Meh".

It’s a flat cap, and he has the opportunity to get out at prime UFA age. I don’t think he, or any other player, would accept a 7-8 year deal at that age absent a massive ($10M+) overpay.

Make a mistake, that’s what they’re going to do.

Initially I found this one fine, then I noticed who ended up becoming the cap casuality, and now I'm much less of a fan.

Wouldn’t he be ufa after this season since it will be his 7th pro season?

You are 100% right to correct me. I totally forgot about the 40Games/7years rule and just went with the usual 27 y.o. one. Thanks.

Next season will be his 7th, so CLB actually got 3 of his UFAs years. Still not long term, but decent win!

It's an overpay for what Laine brings. And then when you add in the trade... Bjorkstrand v Laine

Just over a year later and he's an $8.7 million healthy scratch.

Oh boy.
