A Neutral Observer Taking On A JT Miller trade and a Garland Trade

Created by: OldHabsFan61
Team: 2022-23 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 22, 2022
Published: Jul. 22, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Vancouver needs a young RHD. They also need first round pick in 2023. A b grade prospect should round out the deal for JT

Garland to NJ makes sense for both sides. NJ needs a winger and they have plenty of space to afford his cap hit

Pretty much 0 chance the Canucks sell Miller that low. Plus I’m not sure they would move on from garland for futures only. I think he’s only traded if a defenseman is coming back

3 pieces is what you could expect to get back. With retention you could get another pick but why retain when Miller’s on such a great cap hit?

I wouldn’t trade him unless he’s clearly not resigning

More? Two pieces instead of 3 isn’t more. You aren’t giving up a major asset in Bastian.

This would make sense if the Canucks were rebuilding. But the Canucks are not. They want to consistently contend for the Stanley cup by always making the playoffs. Unless the Canucks get a RH defenseman, a solid prospect or a young top 6 forward back I don’t think the management even answer the call.

Then it makes no sense to trade Miller at all unless he isn’t resigning

If Miller isn’t signed by the deadline and this is the best offer on the table I wouldn’t hate it. But I think Miller can easily get more

Same with Garland. Would rather trade for a RHD to help immediately

Canucks should trade Miller to recoup some assets. Garland should stay though, he fits our timeline

What is the timeline? The other Canuck fan said you’re trying to be a contender now.

Top 10 protected. If the devils finish in the top 10 they’re keeping their pick

Well our D-core does not allow us to be a contender and Nils Lundkvist is not exactly the missing piece. Tbh, the Pacific division is in shambles right now meaning the Canucks have a good chance of making the playoffs. They will still get destroyed by actual contenders though. If the Canucks move Miller now, I’d say we can be contending in 2 years from now

Rangers likely have a later pick and are giving up two AHLers

President Jim Ruthford has basically said that the Canucks are not close to a contender. We are not contending right now, we do not need win now pieces. We should be in a re-tool right now. Our window is in 2 years

So you’re declaring Nils Lundqvist’s career in the NHL as over?

I’d say he ends up playing fewer games than Bastian (not that Bastian will ever be more than role player or bottom-sixer).

Well he can’t play games where he is now. Who is he going to beat into that right side?
