whos there left for the top 4 D

Created by: zizougaffar
Team: 2022-23 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 23, 2022
Published: Jul. 23, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
man, idk who could the Sens target for the top 4 D other than Chychrun. Tanev or Andersson maybe but I don't see the flames trading them (esp Andersson), even if they have many players playing on the right side. Maybe Carlo, but again, Boston's prob planning to compete at least this season. Klingberg is a great OFD, but we are not really in need for that right now, unless they pair him with Sanderson and let Sanderson take care of the defensive part, even as the biggest Sanderson believer it's risky to do that.

(Batherson and Formenton are in this in case they are cleared from the hockey canada 2018 scandal, if they aint they are removed from the team)

sam girard, jakob chychrun, or klingberg on a 1 year deal would be the best options tbh. maybe we can swing a brannstrom to LAK for one of their RD deal (like durzi or roy)

Girard seems like the type of player that the sens are not looking for. By that, I mean his size is probably the thing that is stopping the sens from getting him. He's a great player, but they already have one in Branny and they don't like him already, at least DJ does not, Dorion traded for him. I like the idea of getting a RD from the kings, although i would prefer Roy over Durzi because Durzi seems like a Klingberg lite

Eh at least Durzi could run PP2. Roy is better defensively though. And presumably Brannstrom would be either part of the package for Girard, or shipped out separately, perhaps in the Zaitsev dump (Chabot-Zub / Sanderson-Girard / Holden-Hamonic)

I mean would definitly not mind having Girard, but I think Dj would oppose having him cuz of his size, even though he was decent in the playoffs

If DJ can’t work with anyone under 6’1” then DJ won’t be working for the Sens for long lol. I’m personally of the opinion that we’re probably gonna have a new coach when we enter our window, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s gone in the next season or two, and Girard is good enough that if you can get him for an affordable price in terms of assets then you should definitely do that.

I think, there is some truth to having a bit of size on defense in order to be successful in the playoffs, if we look at the last few cup winners, they almost all had defenders over 6'0 atleast, only exception was the avs with Girard, but he only played like 7 games cuz of injuries, so he wasnt as effective this playoffs. As for DJ, I still could see him lead us into our winning window, the players seem to like him and they really love to play for him and he makes sure everyone gives their best effort out on the ice. Now is he a great coach, prob not, but he is still a young one who can and prob has learned alot along the way. Only way i see him gone is if the team has a shambolic start that can't be attributed to smth else (i.e covid or injuries)

I mean Makar is under 6’ as well, but regardless, Girard would be our only small guy. You can have one, maybe two, and be fine imo. Chabot, Sanderson, Zub, Kleven, JBD, Thomson can fill out the long term lineup with plenty of size. I think that if we bring in a top 4 D, the expectation should be playoffs, and DJ might be gone if we fall short of that. If we don’t get another top 4 D or face a bunch of major injuries again then maybe he has a longer leash.

ngl, i forgot Makar was 5'11, the way he plays makes you think he's a 6'0 foot player, but I guess that debunks my theory. The expectations this year has to be playoffs or at least be in the race for it at the end of the season, and if we aren't achieving either, DJ is long gone, esp if Dorion gets him that top 4 D
