He's 29 and scored 99 points last year. It's an underpayment, I was being generous,

There's no reason for the Devils to do that. The Devils aren't a win-now team, they're a team at the beginning of their window. Young players like Mercer have more value than 30 year olds with one year left before UFA

Devils pass on this. A Severson for Miller deal may make sense.

Yeah and he's also likely to never score 99 points again, considering he's never come close before.

Most Canucks fans would consider this deal very dissapointing. Considering both Devils and Canucks fans don't like it, probably means it's in the right ballpark. You realize Miller has been over a point a game for the last 3 seasons as a Canucks right. This year wasn't some fluke. Devils also have the cap space to resign him, while VAN doesn't, only reason we are considering moving one of the top 10 forwards in the sport.

He ain't top 10, he's not even top 100. Unless you're talking about current players then maybe top 100, but your comment doesn't specify.

They pretty clearly mean current forwards... But he isn't a top 10 forward, I agree to that.

Also, the value of a player goes beyond how good they currently are. Nobody would deny that Miller is a better player than Mercer and probably better than Mercer ever will be. But a 29 y/o with one year left on his deal makes way less sense for the Devils than a very promising 20 y/o with 1 year burned off his ELC.

Putting aside the trade chatter ....
I watched many of JT Miller's early career games with NY & he was unequivocally no where near Mercer is at a similar point in his career. I'm not sure how you get to Miller probably being better than Mercer ever will be, but I guess it's possible...but I suspect it is equally possible Mercer matches or exceeds Miller based on equating their career development curves.

I mean... Miller just scored more points than any Devil has in the entire history of the team. It's very optimistic to think that Mercer will ever hit that peak.

Really a moot point. There's no way the Devils would trade Mercer for Miller, never mind adding a first.

We can agree on that one ... Hopefully Fitzgerald also agrees
