Don’t think NYI would be willing to move Barzel. If he became available I’d be all over this. Laine would need a healthy 40+ goal season to fetch that return also.

you wouldn’t get that value for laine considering the cap situation you were in.

My thinking is Lou makes another one of his "GM of the year moves" and signs Kadri

I kind of like Laine as a better fit with Gaudreau than Barzal. So feel like I wouldn't want CBJ to have pushed for this

We would absolutely get a high return for Laine lol. I'm not a huge fan but you have to respect how high the league thinks of him.

of course, but again bjorkstrand is also a great player and you got practically nothing for him. teams make trades for low value when their backs are against the wall cap-wise (see: buchnevich, toews). not saying the return would have been bjorkstrand bad, but it wouldn’t have been this high.

Bjorkstrand was a cap dump, that wouldn't be the case here

The Isles would move Pageau, Bailey, and almost ever other forward before moving Barzal.

I feel like it'd be fine either way, but I feel like a Gaudreau-Someone-Laine line is going to be hilariously good.

Barzal is the face of the isles and Laine is the exact opposite of the player Lou would target

bjorkstrand wasn’t a cap dump caliber player, he was a cap dump because of the situation, the same would be true here

I disagree. You don't dump someone that's regarded as highly as Laine. This would be a star for star trade

the situation CBJ was in meant any opposing GM had them over a barrel. no one was giving up a star of their own to help them out of it.

Then we would just keep Laine.

I think the fans think way more highly of Laine than other NHL GMs. He returned a disgruntled high end 2C the last time he was available. Since that trade what has he done to increase his value?

I mean he went PPG last year

I say all this as someone who really doesn't like Laine much. But I think GMs would give up lots for him

...what the heck is with all these Barzal-to-Jackets AGMs all of a sudden? Are we trying to harass Islanders fans the same way we've been getting harrassed by others?

He's their franchise player. Let it go.
