Assuming Severson signs an extension this would be a good deal for both teams. Severson is likely gone anyway and while giving up Mercer sucks we get that flashy top 6 winger for Hughes (and hopefully Holtz).

This isn’t awful value for the leafs but for a team in win now mode this trade makes the team worse

Trading Mercer for two years of Nylander is nothing short of a major mistake for a team like the Devils, let alone adding on top of that.
Seriously hope they wouldn’t consider that.

I think it would definitely weaken our offence but overall I think the team would benefit from a deal like this. Especially if we can sign Severson to an extension after.

And Nylander is signed for only 2 years. We’ve got Mercer for at least 6 years.

Maybe there is a Severson (extended) for Nylander scenario that works though.

Maybe this trade doesn’t make sense for devils (or leafs imo), but Nylander for Severson makes absolutely no sense for Leafs.

There would be other pieces. Just wouldn’t include Mercer.
