GIVE YOUR OPINIONS. If it’s stupid go on ahead and roast me. If it isn’t enough let me know. If it’s too much say it. There is a lot happening here I know. But thinking of it deeply. It all makes a lot of sense to me. Maybe, juuuust maybe there’s something bigger brewing then we think

  4. 2024 3rd round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
So to put in to something of a trade at this calibre I would be thinking of the following
Jesper Bratt and a 1st round pick and 3rd for JT Miller and a 3rd
Damon Severson for Conor Garland and a 2nd
NJD
  1. Garland, Conor
  2. Miller, J.T. ($2,625,000 retained)
  3. 2023 3rd round pick (VAN)
  4. 2024 2nd round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
The reason I have Bratt in the trade proposal is because New Jersey seems to not want to pay Bratt. Maybe they’d have a better time extending Miller rather than negotiating with Bratt.
Garland and Severson pretty much add up to each other but I could see New Jersey squeezing more out of Vancouver to get them Severson. New Jersey doesn’t really have a high need of cap space if they don’t want to pay Bratt what he’s asking so they bring in Miller and Garland and I suspect Bernier may go on the LTIR freeing up much more cap space for them. So maybe they can even squeeze a 2nd for Severson to get Garland in return.
And if I’m being completely honest. This can be one hell of a blockbuster for both teams to build on. They have been teams linked to each other via potential trades and now there’s still a lot of time to pull off a blockbuster deal and of a big calibre one.
New Jersey has been known for a while to have interest in both Miller and Garland and Vancouver with interest in Severson and with Bratt being a problem for New Jersey maybe Vancouver will have interest in him especially with Patrik Allvin having a love for Swedish players

I feel like everyone in this comment section is calling each other out rather than me. So let me explain in deeper discussion and I will do what I can to say why I feel like it’s as even as it is.
To begin on Vancouvers side
JT Miller has been and insane point producing top line winger/centre over the last 3 seasons. There was questions if he was going to be able to replicate his first season campaign with Vancouver and yes he didn’t put up the same kind of production in a shortened 56 game season but Vancouver was a team hit hard with injuries and covid. But he quickly rebounded this season and put up insane numbers and being the difference maker under Travis Green’s broken system and seemingly elevated his game under Boudreau. What we are talking about is a guy that put up 99 points in 80 games being pretty consistent. So for Miller and a 3rd to go the Devils way with salary retained can only get Vancouver a bigger return. And I’ve seen the argument of Miller being 29 but here’s the thing. Johnny Gaudreau is turning 29 in the next few weeks and a couple months younger than Miller. What would the point be of bringing up age in this conversation? If I’m being honest age is really a useless point in a conversation. Not to mention that New Jersey had some serious interest in Gaudreau and then ended up singing Palat who is 31 and still a fantastic top 6 winger that is an amazing playoff performer. And let’s not forget to mention Miller was a big playoff performer for Vancouver in the 2020 playoffs. And I’ll end it off here let’s not forget Dougie Hamilton was signed last season and is older than both Gaudreau and Miller. All born the same year. Doesn’t make a difference really.

As for Conor Garland as much as I love the guy but to me as a Canuck fan a one for one swap of him and Severson feels doubtful. LA with one of the best prospect pools especially with RHDs didn’t want to trade one of them and a draft pick for Garland. And if you can’t get that for Garland then what is the thinking that he’ll get us a current top 4 RHD one for one. Don’t you think it would’ve happened already? Marino for Garland didn’t happen as well because Garland isn’t as highly valued in the trade market. And while I do understand he’s a top 6 winger with great upside, there’s plenty of players like him to find. That’s why Vancouver would have to pay a slightly bigger price to get a top 4 RHD.

For New Jersey’s side
I love Jesper Bratt and his development has been an incredible journey to see. There is the question of does he take the next step into being over a PPG player or is this where his production remains steady and I can absolutely understand why Devils fans wouldn’t want to let him go. He’s young and has great upside. But the fact he isn’t signed yet gives me a lot of questions as to why he hasn’t been signed yet. It’s a bit crazy because of how well he’s played himself into a top line player and yet New Jersey doesn’t want to pay the guy. Perhaps they can end up agreeing to a one year contract but that’d be a bit dumb.

Damon Severson is pretty explanatory. Solid top 4 RHD with a solid two way game. I’d picture his value being pretty high if New Jersey is to move him.

As for the draft picks being moved in the trades JT Miller with salary retention and a 3rd for Bratt and a 1st I feel can be close value. JT Miller would most definitely sign an extension with New Jersey I think and vastly improves their top 6 along with Garland.
Conor Garland and a 2nd should do for Severson.

And to say the least as why this trade just maybe happens is look at the Calgary and Florida deal. Florida got Tkachuk and a 4th alone for Huberdeau, Weegar, decent prospect AND a 1st. This trade is nothing compared to that one.

At the same time I 100% understand why many would feel why this trade shouldn’t happen. But it’s sort of a trade that can help both sides. You could stick with the 4 players involved in the trade and work out the rest of the assets that need to be moved which would be draft picks.

With Dorion having free range with what he can do now I’m sure he’ll work something out to move Zaitsev. From the moves he’s been making he wants this team to really compete and the moves he’s made has really improved the team on pen and paper. I’m excited to see their results

Yes, Dorion has made some great moves and hopefully there's more to come, but acquiring Tyler Myers would not be one of them.

He’s decently defensively. Him and OEL were our stronger shutdown pairing. Him at $4.5M would be a better add than Zaitsev by a mile.

"Better than Zaitsev" is an extremely low bar. If he had ONE season remaining it might be something we'd consider but the possibility of having HIM and Zaitsev on the books next year makes the answer no.

I definitely would not say Myers is a negative add on. There’s been a lot of interest in him over the past few months. There is the question of how much Vancouver would be willing to retain out of Myers cap hit. But to say the least we’ll have to wait and see who Zaitsev would accept trades to though. Because he does have a 10 team no trade list. Arizona would be easy but he has to keep them off his no trade list.

I would say Severson + 1st + 3rd = Miller

Garland + 2nd + 3rd + Miller retention for Bratt probably favours the Canucks a bit but not extremely far off imo, especially considering RFA Wingers typically get less than expected returns

That's still an overpay for Bratt
