The Sweeney scramble

Created by: ngikas
Team: 2022-23 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 1, 2022
Published: Aug. 1, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Don is informed that David Krejci isnt coming back. Pasta indicates that he wants out. To stay competitive don gets JT miller in a 1 for 1 or close to it. Whatever has to be even'd out.

Smith to cgy: makes sense to me. idk their farm system and if anyones coming up and ready to make the leap but they only have I think 9 or 10 fwds under contract on the roster, 10 or 11 once Mangiapane is re-upped.

Wags to anh: don loves trading with them, could really be to anywhere.

Then Don Sweeney takes advantage of the late offseason free agents. Go for a couple prove it deals with Rodrigues and Milano.

The Canucks accept but I have a hard time seeing Boston doing that

Its tough to let go of pasta but we won't go anywhere without a #2 center, probably dont go much further even with this roster but the stronger down the middle we are, the more confident I am in any chance of making a run. And with the lack of center depth organizationally it almost seems like a no brainer type move if pasta wants out

Seems like a strange move to trade rental Pastrnak for rental Miller…

Well if Bergy is coming back you're going to have to create the best chance to win. Not having a 2C isnt a good formula for winning. Ill take the rental center which is the truest need over a rental winger which is replaced with a prove it contract winger on another "rental" signing. If Krejci ends up coming back then this mock can be thrown in the trash

That doesn't make sense for the Canucks. Sure they get a few years younger but they're still basically in the same spot with Pasta being a rental too

It helps fill out the top 6, ideally I'd assume both teams would rather make the trade with extensions in place for both players.

    Garland - Petterson - Pasta/Boeser
    Mikheyev - Horvat - Boeser/Pasta

Idk much about the Nucks prospect group so idk if someone takes Mikheyev's spot there at LW2. But its a talented top 6 FWD group nonetheless. $23M in cap for the Nucks next season (if no cap raise), Pasta and Horvat would likely take up $16-18M of it. Leaving a solid $7-5M to retain Hoglander and Dermott (if he's in the long term plan) and to fill out a couple other roster spots.

Taking all this info based off this mock; https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/3548033 and making my best longer term assumptions as a Bruins fan about what the plan could be for the Nucks moving forward after a deal like this.

The Canucks still would have Hoglander, Podkolzin, and Kuzmenko on the wings. Which means they would have to play one of them on the 4th line which isn't gonna happen.

So you wouldn't want to acquire Pasta at the expense of Garland or one of the 3 players you just named? I have no clue about any of those prospects besides a bit about Hoglander and thats more fantasy hockey knowledge of the player, not necessarily actual hockey knowledge. Will any of them be the player that Pasta is today? In a move like this you're just re-establishing your core by moving on from Miller and getting Pasta (assuming the deal goes with extensions).

If Krejci doesn't come back they're in a worse spot than this mocked team. The RW takes a hit obviously but you get a guy whose probably considered a good #1 center across the league. Rodrigues on a 1 yr stint, had a solid year, late in the off season, why not? He's gonna be playing with good players. Milano is riskier imo. He played with better talent last year and he could go either way. But I'll take the hit on the wing to strengthen the middle any day.

Hoglander and Podkolzin likely never become the scorers that Pasta is, @theAlien is just explaining that adding more winger depth is not a pressing need for the Canucks so as to not push the young guys too far down the depth chart. Plus, we don't know if Kuzmenko is gonna hit or not, let alone to what degree
